285 Puppies Rescued Amid Tornado Warnings

Browse News

NASHVILLE -- The American Humane helped rescue more than 250 puppies from a suspected mill in White County, Tenn., on Feb. 11, but the seizure did not guarantee the dogs' imminent safety.

With severe tornado and thunderstorm warnings looming over the central Tennessee region, the American Humane's Animal Emergency Services team remained on high alert as of this weekend.

Two hundred and eighty five puppies were discovered in the raid, which took place early Wednesday morning. The dogs were found in a residence and multiple buildings on the property, according to the ASPCA, which also led the rescue efforts.

The puppies have been placed in an emergency shelter; attempts to protect them from not only man-made, but natural harms, as well, have "hampered some of the seizure activity in order to keep all personnel safe," according to an American Humane release.

"The storm came in hard and fast -- a part of the system that hit Oklahoma last night destroying businesses, homes and lives," said Tracy Reis, an American Humane team leader for the project, in a release issued on Thursday. "The clouds came in low, dark and amazingly fast -- spreading hard rain, high wind and pea sized hail over us here at the emergency shelter.

"The areas we worked in were covered in feces, and as the rain came down hard yesterday, everything became slick with both feces and mud."

The efforts ensued, however, despite the conditions, to rescue hundreds of Boston Terriers, Chihuahuas, Boxers, Daschunds, Lhasa Apsos, Cairn Terriers, Shih Tzu, Miniature Pinschers and other small breed puppies under 20 pounds.

The dogs were in dire need of food, water, health care and rest, according to Reis, who noted that all of those accommodations were "desperately lacking in their feces-covered cages back at the seizure site."

Twelve volunteers' all-day efforts went well into the night, according to American Humane representative Kelly Weir, who said that they all worked until 2 a.m. on Wednesday, into Thursday morning.

The dogs were found to have "multiple ailments," according to the American Humane, including mange, eye ulcers and bloody stool. Twenty of them have been placed into isolation; a few of the dogs are also pregnant and nursing, and they, too, are being closely monitored.

"Many of the dogs have never been out of their cages in their lives and were clearly afraid of humans," the AHA release states.

The dogs remain under the legal custody of the White County Sheriff's Department.

Despite the many potential adopters who have stepped forward since the raid last week, the dogs will not be up for adoption until pending legal investigations, and potential cases, are resolved.

People can monitor the puppies' progress and eligibility for adoption on American Humane's Web site, AmericanHumane.org.

In the meantime, the AHA, ASPCA and Nashville Humane Association, which also aided in the seizure, will continue to feed, walk and care for the young pups as they recover from two traumatizing ordeals.

"The healthier dogs are getting petted, groomed and clipped, and you can just see by looking at them that they are more comfortable, perhaps the most comfortable they have ever been in their lives," one AHA rescuer said.

According to the ASPCA, an investigation was launched in September, when a consumer visiting the commercial kennel altered the White County Humane Society to unsanitary conditions there.

The Humane Society of the United States had also received complaints around that time and, in conjunction with the sheriff's department, initiated a formal investigation.

Hang the monsters who ran this puppy mill........hang them by their ankles in a well full of feces........douse them in urine now and then so they don't dehydrate

It would be something to stick those people in a cage and just leave them.Throw them some food once in a while!

I am glad the puppies are safe and sound. Now if only we could close more of these mills and educate people on the background of these places before they go out to purchase them.

There are so many of these puppy mills around the country. I am so glad these puppies were removed from the horrible conditions, but we need to find a way to end puppy mills. Legislation is slow in coming, but we, as grass roots advocates, should be getting the word out to anyone thinking of buying a puppy or kitten from a pet store that doing so perpetuates the puppy mill industry. I am still amazed how many people aren't aware that the puppies in pet stores almost exclusively come from puppy mills. And, there are still thousands of pet stores across the country selling puppies and kittens.

Can you imagine all these puppy mills over the USA. What happens when bad weather is on them, such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes and so on. There is no one to sooth and comfort them - just breeding machines, it makes me sick!

Bless the efforts of our unsung heroes in animal protection. I don't know how they do it and remain positive and proactive. My heart is truly breaking for these animals. I wish I lived closer so I could just go in and LOVE them and get them used to humans. These people should be horse whipped in a public square somewhere. I have been looking for a Shitzu/mix in honor of my beloved Precious who was adopted from a shelter. I wonder how I could get one of these poor, traumatized babies.

Thank you to the people who stepped in and rescued these dogs from such terrible conditions. It is so sad to hear of dogs that have lived their entire lives in cages and are afraid of humans. Hopefully those days will be over for these little lives.

Puppy mills are the pits! You can bet that puppies for sale in "pet" stores came from a puppy mill somewhere. Speak out & get involved. Its the only way to educate the masses about this horrible industry. Blessings to all the volunteers who work so hard to save them!

That is a lot of dogs - who are they selling all these to? Some people and pet stores need to wake up!!! We need more TV publicity on how horrible the conditons are for these dogs so people quit buying from them. If there wasn't a market these cruel people would not be in the dog breeding business. The need to make the punishments stiffer.

Disgusting! The penalty will no doubt not be stiff enough for whomever is responsible. Glad they were rescued and will get a chance at a better life. Puppy mills should be outlawed.

Some place such little value on life. I have e-mailed, called and visited our public officials. Asking why can we get chimp legislation so quickly? An not pass anything on puppy mills. I mean how any chimp incidents have we had in recent years?
People who do rescue are indeed special. Thanks for you efforts!

I wonder how many of the rescued dogs will survive. Many will probably be very sick and undersocialized to the point of being beyond rehabilitation. Kudos to the rescuers.

I hope they don't get caught up in seizure laws that don't allow the pups to be adopted out or returned until the case is solved. Texas is working on this law now so confiscated dogs and cats don't have to linger in limbo for who knows how long. Support your legislators in their efforts to change the law.
