Chimpanzees belong in the natural world with their own kind. I don't go to the zoo anymore. Long ago, I stopped going into the ape house at the St. Louis Zoo, because I could not stand to look in their eyes, to look at their blank, often times, sad faces. The last time I went in there, I left after only a few moments with tears in my eyes. I'm sad this chimp's life had to come to such a sad, tragic end.

SAD FOR THE WOMAN THAT LOST HER LIFE...BUT THESE TYPES OF ANIMALS SHOULDN'T BE RAISED LIKE A HUMAN. WHAT CAUSED THE ATTACK IS MY QUESTION? ANIMALS JUST DON'T GO BI-POLAR LIKE THAT...YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING TO IT.

Thats very sad for the women who was injured but also for the women who raised this animal as a child, Im sure it was difficult to have to do that to a part of her family to save someones life. Interested to know what made the animal attack.

If this woman had done her homework she would have known from any published articles that these type of animals have natural instincts, just like a cat or dog or bird. There is a place for all types of animals and this one is in the wild where he can be a tree swinger not a killer of the human population.

I agree that wild animals should not be pets. I heard something once about monkeys brains growing but not their skull and that make them crazy--don't know if that is true but it would explain a formerly loving chimps rampage.

Personally, I view the chimp as the real victim in this story. Chimps are WILD animals. They are not domesticated and should not be kept in areas outside of their natural environments or animal sanctuaries. I hope the owner is brought on wrongful death charges... same as if something would have happened if a "pet tiger" or "pet lion" got loose and hurt someone. People talk about how this chimp hurt a human when it was only doing what it might do in the wild if it felt threatened. You can't get mad at UNDOMESTICATED animals for following natural instincts when they feel threatened.

To begin with, why is it necessary to use wild animals for our entertainment? There are so many stories of celebrity animals that either attack or are treated horribly when they're no longer cute enough or will do what they're told. I realize that's not the crux of this story, but it does address how the poor chimp ended up like this.

As of yet, no charges have been filed against Harold. Why? The whole town seemed to view this animal as a little mascot, including the police. The chimps owner ran a towing company, which the local police used. Interviews with neighbors and business owners have commented on how Travis used to stop in for an ice cream, how he would go on towing calls with his owner, how he used to drive the tow truck. Etc... He got out of Harolds car and held up traffic for 2 hours, he bit someone, an animal control officer warned her about the chimp, but nothing was ever done. SOMEONE should have had the balls to really do something about this lady and her "Son." In a recent interview with Harold, she talks about Travis, how much she misses him, how she still wouldn't change a thing..how she doesn't care if people think she is crazy..she will always think of Travis as her son. NO MENTION of her real human friend who had her face ripped off by her "Son." She didn't mention anything about her. What about Charla Nash? Who may have permenant brain damage? Who may never see again? What about the fact that she lost her nose, lips and hands? The woman has no hands! NO FACE? But instead let's talk about how "cute" Travis was when he stopped in for ice cream, or how adorable he was when he towed cars, or how charming he was in his baseball shirts..how he ate the very best foods, how cute it was when he stole the car a few times..
Let's talk about how wonderful chimps are as pets, and how Harold doesn't regret a thing. She still maintains that it wasn't because he was a wild animal that belonged in the wild that made him snap, it was Charla..because she had a new hairstyle.
This woman is lost and in denial.
Very pathetic.

I think it should be illegal for people to keep non-domestic animals as pets. Domesticating a wild animal does not count. They are still wild.

The latest news on the poor woman who was attacked doesn't sound good. I just don't think wild animals should be kept in a private home. The owner should have adopted a child if that's the way she wanted to treat the chimp.

I am sorry this woman lost her chimp friend, but chimps are not people and no amount of treating an animal like a person will make it one.

i think this woman had good intentions when raising this chimp, but it appears that she doesn't have a lot of common sense. i don't know anyone who would just give xanax to an animal - this is definitely an example of how people blur the line between animals and humans.
