100 Cats in One House, and It's Not Hoarding

Browse News

ENGLEWOOD, Fla. -- How's this for karma: A man whose car once sported a bumper sticker reading, "I Love Cats -- Dead Ones" now shares his home with 100 cats, all very much alive.

Rick Kingston and his wife, Chrissy, turned their home into a "no-kill" cat shelter, called Puffy Paws Kitty Haven, in 2006. Now cats relax in every nook, cranny, corner in the Englewood, Fla., residence, about 15 miles south of Sarasota.

The Kingstons live in the 2000 square-foot house with the feline menagerie.

And they've heard all the possible jokes about their living situation.

"People call me the cat man, call her the cat woman," Rick Kingston said. "No, we're just Rick and Chris."

But they don't deny that their lives are unusually intertwined with those of the animals they shelter.

Neither Rick nor Chris has a full-time job. At a daily cost of more than $100 to care for the cats, much of the scratching and clawing in the house comes from the Kingstons struggling to raise necessary funding.

Innocent Beginnings

Chrissy Kingston was 18 and working a contracting job at a private residence when she noticed two kittens near the porch and asked the home's owner about them.

" 'Take them,' " Chrissy remembers him saying. " 'I don't want them anyway.' "

"So I did. That's when I fell in love with cats."

She had just three cats when she and Rick married 11 years ago. Rick's job involved traveling as far north as Tampa. He'd find stray cats and litters of kittens and bring them home. The menagerie began to grow.

It was also when the strange looks and the questions began to come. People noticed the Kingstons at Wal-Mart buying hundreds of pounds of cat litter and asked why they needed so much.

"Everytime we tell someone we have 20, 30, 40 cats, they say 'ooh, your house must stink,' " Rick said.

It didn't stink, they say, because of Chrissy's fastidiousness. She had a house cleaning business and her skills came in handy in keeping her own home clean.

The number of cats continued to climb. Strays showed up. People began to surrender their unwanted pets at the house.

At this point, their home wasn't a shelter, it was just a house with an unusually large number of pet cats, which seemed to adjust well to sharing their territory with each other.

"We've been really lucky'" Chrissy said. "We've never had a cat hurt another cat."

They worked in equal parts to put food on their table and in the cats' bowls. The effort began to overwhelm them.

Incorporation

One day in the fall of 2006, after Rick had managed to scrape $50 together, he told Chrissy that he was going to Wal-Mart to buy a video game. No, you're not, she told him. Some of the cats need medicine.

"I went through the roof," Rick said of the incident. The couple later agreed the financial burden had become too great for them to bear.

"We're taking care of the community's kitty cats," Rick told Chrissy. "We need to ask the community's help."

By December 2006, they established a not-for-profit organization, Puffy Paws Kitty Haven, allowing them to solicit donations. They now offer cats for adoption and welcome visitors by appointment.

The Kingstons are now in the process of filing IRS paperwork for 501(c)(3) status.

"Once that goes through we'll be able to get grants," Chrissy said. "That will be a big help."

First they have to find a lawyer who will file the paperwork for them at a reduced fee. Non-profit status has not eased the financial crunch.

Crisis

Most of the money comes in from small donations. Rick handles the fund raising with telemarketing, salvaging donated junk cars for scrap metal and freelancing graphic design work.

People drop off food, litter and supplies. Some simply leave it outside. Don Gucciardo wanted to see what he'd be supporting first before he donated some materials.

"I made phone calls. Then I wanted to personally see it," Gucciardo said. "And, yeah, I'm satisfied that these people are sincere about what they're doing. The place is clean, the cats look well-cared for."

The daily challenge of fund raising became a crisis when Rick suffered a heart attack in September.

Chrissy tried to step in and help but she already had her hands full caring for the cats.

"Making sure they're fed, boxes are done, it's clean -- is anywhere from 18 to 20 hours a day," she said.

She gave up the last of her home cleaning jobs last year.

They fell two months behind on their Florida Power & Light bill and faced losing electricity.

"We can't let the cats roast," Rick said.

Local media took an interest in their plight and the resulting publicity generated enough donations to pay the power bill.

Always On The Edge

The surge of goodwill got them caught up but the pressure on the Kingstons to keep up with the cats' demands is constant.

They go through 18 pounds of dry cat food, almost 50 pounds of canned food and 250 pounds of cat litter a day.

"It's very stressful because you have to come up with $100 a day or these cats don't eat," Rick said.

A local veterinarian offers services at a reduced cost but the Kingstons have to pay for medications, as well as for testing supplies. Each new cat that comes in must be tested for feline leukemia. The cats are all spayed or neutered. Kittens born in the shelter come from cats already pregnant when they arrived.

Though their routines are ruled by the cats' needs, the Kingstons believe they're doing what's best for themselves and the cats.

"(At) times when I get overwhelmed, which is a lot, I step back and see how happy they are," Chrissy says. "And I see how happy people are when they come over and adopt them."

As many as half of their cats are not adoptable because of age, disease, injury or personality problems. The recent financial scare forced them to create a plan in case their shelter fails, but they know the alternative for many of the cats would be death.

"Unfortunately, if we ever had to relinquish the animals, half of them would be euthanized, because of the physical, emotional and behavior problems," Rick said.

From Puffy Paws Kitty Haven
Update-Part 11

501(c) (3) Tax Exempt Status Pending

Puffy Paws Kitty Haven has completed the necessary paperwork and filed with
the U.S. government for 501(c) (3) tax exempt status. Thanks to the
Ralph and Virginia Mullen Foundation. This was a long time coming and
now we can apply for grant money. In a few months we can enjoy the
great benefits that come along with being tax exempt once we get the
nod from the IRS.

We'll keep you all informed and up to date as our pending application is processed with the IRS.

Just to let you know that one of the primary benefits of being considered
tax-exempt under IRS Section 501(c) (3) is the ability to accept
contributions and donations that are tax-deductible to the donor.

Puffy Paws Kitty Haven would like to inform you that any and all
contributions are tax deductible which are made prior to and after
PPKH receives there 501(c) status from the IRS. PPKH has been informed
that all contributions will be retroactive from 27 months once PPKH
obtains 501(c) (3) status from the IRS.
Donate To Help The Kitties

Running Puffy Paws Kitty Haven is an up hill battle. With the cost of the
kitties, daily needs reaching over a hundred dollar a day and the other
associated bills that come with running the Haven; it is always a major
task in fund raising those dollars on a daily basis.

So if you would like to help, please do.You may go on-line to donate.
www.puffypawskittyhaven.com

If you can not help today, we thank you for your support in the past from the bottom of our hearts.

KITTY ANGEL PARK

We are almost done with the Kitty Angel Park, for those of you who do not
know that we take care of kitties with Feline Leukemia which are housed
in a portion (400 sq feet) in our second building which is 800 sq foot
and is refereed to as the “Kitty Angel Club”.

We call it the “Kitty Angel Club” because these kitties are living Angels
because they would have been euthanized at other highly publicize
traditional shelters and or rescues because of their medical condition.

Now these guys would love to be outside enjoying the fresh air and now they
will be enjoying an out-door, free-standing, backyard fence system
thanks to the folks from Purr...fact fence.

We have been working really hard in getting the grounds ready, in clearing
a ton of stones, laying stones, pressure washing, Now thanks to Markus who had to do Community service hours the Purr…fect fence is up and almost ready to go.

We need to raise about $400 dollars for a pallet of sod, a new door with a
big doggie door installed and material for a kitty tunnel so they may
go back and forth from the Kitty Angle club to their own park. How cool
is that. So if you would like to help, you may donate if you wish.

KITTY BOX WASHING STATION

What do you do when you go through 3,000 pounds of kitty litter a week and
you have to wash out over 30 kitty boxes, twice daily and your wife
tells you better pitch in or else ?

You create an outside kitty box washing station. With an investment of $100
Mostly for the drainage stones, washing bins and brushes, We created an area
outside which has literally help take off 2 hours a day from Chrissy
schedule, just by me pitching in and helping her with the boxes. And
who said men were good for nothing.

Welcome to Puffy Paws Kitty Haven News Update

We have been busy as beavers over here and it seems we are moving in the
right direction but sometimes its like one paw forward and two paws
back over here for the kitties.

So we are going to let you folks know the good, the bad and
the funny that has happened here at Puffy Paws lately.

Rick & Chris Kingston
Founders - Puffy Paws Kitty Haven
www.puffypawskittyhaven.com

Where Is Your Money Going?

It seems nationally hundred of thousands of dollars of donations are
getting chewed up in administration cost and winding up in pockets of
staff and high ranking Administers.

Over here at Puffy Paws, we still go day by day in putting kitty food on the
table. Sometimes it just does not to seem fair.

But you have to ask yourself “Why does this happen “.

The reason being is that because folks are not educating themselves how their charitable dollars are being spent.

If you want to know how your dollar is being spent in Florida check out the Gift
Givers' Guide - A Guide to Charitable Giving in Florida put out by
the Florida Department Of Agriculture & Consumer Services .

Just copy and paste their address in your address bar and do not forget
to put in the charity you want to check out.

Here is our record from last year! Our total revenue in 2008 that we raised for the kitties was - $36,317.03

We spent $35,425.64 (98% of Total Expenses) on the kitties direct needs

Our Administrative Cost $543.14 (2% of Total Expenses)

Our Fund-Raising Cost was $0.00 (0% of Total Expenses)

Our Payment to Affiliates was $0.00 (0% of Total Expenses) Our Total Expenses was $35,968.78 - We had a of Surplus of $348.25

Are numbers are solid! Only 2% on Administrative Cost. That is because we
do not pay ourselves like most animal welfare organizations do.

0% spent on fundraising. Why is that? Because it does not cost us anything
to open up our mouth and ask for financial help for the kitties.

Here is a fun fact - We can take care of the kitties yearly daily needs on
the salary of an Executive Director at any Humane Society in the Untied
States.

Over here at Puffy Paws Kitty Haven we chose to use your donation dollar for
the direct benefit of the kitties not for the direct benefit of the people who are taking care of the kitties.

Community Service Personal

Many Rescues and Humane Societies have a paid staff and an army of
volunteers. Over here at Puffy Paws we are not as fortunate as other
rescues in the area to be afforded such a talent pool.

So we have tapped into a free talent pool. Folks who need to fullfill
their debt to society by doing community service hours. Bu utilizing
this resource and their skills, the kitties will have a pool of skilled
and unskilled labor at their beckon meow

It’s win /win situation for the kitties. In February we have had the
Purr…fect fence System put up, the deck was painted and the inside of
the Haven was prepped for painting. Wow! All done by Community Service
Personal.

The possibilities are endless in using this vast talent pool and the kitties can’t be happier!

Really ! We live off the cats ? You are so smart ! Wow you have us now. How about first learning how to retain information from the video you just watch and realize my wife and I have are own income.

Try educating yourself first before you show you mental ability ! Here are some facts to start off with !

Our total revenue in 2008 that we raised for the kitties was - $36,317.03

We spent $35,425.64 (98% of Total Expenses) on the kitties direct needs

Our Administrative Cost $543.14 (2% of Total Expenses)

0% spent on fund raising. Why is that ? Because it does not cost us anything to open up our mouth and ask for finical help for the kitties.

Ask your humane Society or rescue how much they spends for fund raising or salaries. Its your right to ask !

Did you know that we can run Puffy Paws Kitty Haven easily on a typical average salary that an Executive Director of Humane Society gets.

Once again folks, please go to our Web site

I have 6 cats and know how expesive it is for just them. I can't imagine the expense and the amount of work all of those cats require. And the individual attention they all need. If all the cats are provided with all of their needs, great. But there's a fine line there. Especially in this economy. Best of luck to them. Hope it all turns out well for them and the cats.

As a person in the animal welfare industry, the animals deserve my support, that is correct. As a person with experience in philanthrophy as well as state and local health agencies, I have an obligation to question. Unfortunately I have seen many organizations with charitable licenses and permits that should have been closed down because of horrific overcrowding and sickly animals. Sad to say, but in todays economic times, we all have to be vigilant because charitable contributions are declining. See recent articles on reputable shelters closing their doors. I hope this organization is doing everything right for the animals and contrary to what we would like to believe, love is not enough.

Dear ZooToo Community

Here at Puffy Paws we are grateful for all the positive and loving support that we received from the Zoo Too Community and on the other hand we seem to be defending ourselves against many so called “ Animal Experts “ here on the Zoo Too community. These folks find it necessary to leave negative, awful comments every week. Just like the comment from the cheery soul above.

I have spent over 25, 000 dollars of my own money vetting kitties that we rescued from a Hoarder who ran a shelter. Not to mention the cost of food and litter.

I picked up cats off the floor that were on their death bed. Some made it and many did not. I saw the aftermath of eyes blowing out from infection and neglect .

How dare you refer to us as Horders, I bet this person above never went to our Web site and educated himself about us

I know what a Hoarder is, and I saw the horrible damage that they causeand we are not Hoarders. So please insult someone else.

What is questionable is the person inability to educated themselves about who we are and what we do.

We just had ABC-7 & NBC-2 News doing a story about our need for funding .

And once again rave reviews and huge financial response from the Community .
They did not point fingers at us. They did not hurt us. They help us to help the kitties.

Just to let you know both reporters were amazed how well the kitties live at Puffy Paws Kitty Haven.

And once again the Community came through because this is bigger than my wife and I. We can not do this alone but with World-Wide support we can do this together. Why don't all you Nay Sayers put your money were your mouths are and send a couple bucks the kitties way instead of sending bad energy and negativity.
Please open up your eyes because No-Kill alternatives do exist such as, Puffy Paws. Our home is more set up like a bed and breakfast than a tradition shelter where kitties are caged.

It was tough doing this story because we bared our soul on this one, we are not perfect but the kitties come first in our lives and if we run short on anything we always asked the cat lovers in the world for help.

We are grateful for our supporters and our volunteers. We are especially grateful for, Loving Care Animal Hospital who does our spaying, neutering and all of the medical for all the kitties. They do this at cost ! So we may adopt out the unwanted kitties of the community.

We are not rich folks over here. My wife and I do not take a salary from the kitties. My wife and I live a financial existence which we are happy with. We never woke up and said “Cats That’s Where The Money Is “.

Our kitties always have had food in their bowls and the reason the kitties never went without their necessities is because of this wonderful community we live in.

We have an adoption program, volunteers , fund raisers , foster families and everything else that No kill rescues have. Check out our Web site.
www.puffypawskittyhaven.com

For all the naysayers, since we have appeared on Zoo Too, please ask your selves how many ten of thousands of kitties were killed in your Humane Societies that you support with your donations. All of our kitties are safe, loved and they are all still alive.

Go our Web site, its choke full of information. www.puffypawskittyhaven.com
Spend some time on it and than leave a comment !

Since the Summer of 2007, we adopted out over 100 kitties.

We have more free roaming , cage - less (2800 sq foot - 2 buildings ) space dedicated to our kitties than most Humane Societies have for their adoptable cats in our area.

I do not know why I feel the need to defend our self against all these negative comments by these uneducated readers of the ZooToo community but I do !

Puffy Paws is doing an extraordinary job! Keep up the great work. Anyone who has not at least researched Puffy Paws has no right to say otherwise because of their ignorance. There is a lot of video and written news about the organization available by online search that DOCUMENTS that Puffy Paws is wonderful place. Some of the nasty comments left here are really out of line...

As a person working in animal welfare you should know the difference between hoarding and lifesaving. What these people are doing is no different than what is going on in the shelter where you work, except that these people do it for the pure love of these animals and not for money. They deserve your support, not contempt.

What's the cutoff? How can having 100 cats not be considered hoarding?

And they Don't Work Why ?

Is this the only positive thing that you could comment about ?
The way that my wife and I earn our personal income. Because we work !

Boy do we work ! Lets see did you miss the part that my wife works over 15 hours a day talking care of the cats. That’s not work ?

Did you miss the part were it said I'm disable due to my heart disease and its my job to raise the hundred dollars a day for the kitties needs

Just for your information we are not rich folks over here. My wife and I do not take a salary from the kitties. My wife and I live a financial existence which we are happy with. Our personal income is none of your business.

We never woke up and said “Cats That’s Where The Money Is “.

Last year we went through 100,000 pounds of cat litter and 10,000 cans of cat food. You do not think that’s not work raising that kind of money and going out and buying their supplies every day.

You better Lay Off The Catnip !

Here is a fun fact..

In order to raise funds for the kitties at Puffy Paws Kitty Haven We must and are registered and licensed with the Florida Department Of Agriculture & Consumer Services - License # CH22145. We must report the income and what we do with it every year.

If you want to see how the funds are spent, click on the link below and do not forget to Puffy Paws Kitty Haven in the box.

There you would find out that

Our total revenue in 2008 that we raised for the kitties was - $36,317.03
We spent $35,425.64 (98% of Total Expenses) on the kitties direct needs
Our Administrative Cost $543.14 (2% of Total Expenses)
Our Fund-Raising Cost was $0.00 (0% of Total Expenses)
Our Payment to Affiliates was $0.00 (0% of Total Expenses)
Our Total Expenses was $35,968.78
We have a of Surplus/Deficit $348.25

Are numbers are solid ! Only 2% on Administrative Cost. That is because we do not pay ourselves like most Humane societies do.

The IRS will have no problem if we paid ourselves over 100,000 thousand dollars a year if we wanted to, for the work that we do.

0% spent on fundraising.

Once again folks, please go to our Web site
www.puffypawskittyhaven.com
and or even watch the video and read the story carefully, so you will not leave such questionable and lovely comments !

There will always be someone out there who will have something to say. I am glad there are people like you who love animals enough to take them in. I am on disability, and food stamps, and I get the fun stigma attached to that all the time. I understand that that has nothing to do with what you are doing. If anything you are providing a life for these animals that would be dead right now, while I am sure being therapeutic for you both as well! They say your greatest treasure is not material things, but the impact you make on the earth, and you are definitely making an impact! Keep doing what you are doing, and bless you all for helping these kitties!

Wow! The cats definitely look well cared for. They were all chubby and looked content. Yes - it's a lot of cats but at least they are free roaming and most get along. They did say they never had an incident where one cat hurt another. That in itself is huge. Good job!

Hopefully they are also taking care of themselves because who would step in if one or both were sick or could no longer care for the cats??

I do not understand the negative comments this story has generated. If the cats are being well cared for and adopted out to good homes, how is this any different than other cat shelters. The only difference I can see is they also share their home, which just means the cats are getting even more time to socialize with humans before their adoption, that is a good thing. In most shelters cats are locked in cages getting very little socialization with people or other cats, these cats seemed relaxed and happy.
I find it odd that the story about the man with 500 cats that are kept outside and NOT available for adoption, even though many seemed like very friendly cats has got overwelmingly positive comments. Yet this couple who are running a a no kill shelter and finding homes for cats get such negative attention. I don't understand.

This couple is doing a wonderful thing. I don't understand the negative comments either. Maybe some folks are just not reading the article completely. If they do read the article completely they should see that this is an excellent place and they are doing great things.
