1,000 Salmonella Infected Turtles Euthanized

Browse News

PENDLETON, Ore. -– Nearly 1,000 confiscated Red-eared Slider turtles have been euthanized by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife after they were found to have salmonella.

The Department collected 728 baby turtles from a Hermiston, Ore. residence on Sept. 5. The owner, Emmelyn Caliso, had been selling the Red-eared Sliders, which are native to the Southeast quadrant of the United States.

The turtles were considered illegal, as it is prohibited to traffic or possess any non-native wildlife species in the state.

After the USFWS collected the initial batch of turtles it issued a notice, alerting residents that the quarter-sized baby turtles were illegal and could potentially carry salmonella.

Within less than two weeks, over 1,000 turtles were surrendered to the USFWS.

The turtles have been held by the USFWS for the past month, quarantined while they underwent salmonella testing.

Over 1,000 of the turtles tested positive for the contagious infection, which can cause medical complications relating to gastroenteritis. It can prove especially harmful for young children and elderly persons.

"We did a sampling of them and they have tested positive for salmonella," Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife spokeswoman Meg Kennagy said.

"Because of that and the fact that there is the FDA ban on the list of distribution on the Red-eared Sliders it would have been irresponsible to try and place these turtles elsewhere."

The FDA bans the distribution of turtles if their shells are less than four inches long. The confiscated turtles' shells were about one inch in diameter.

Caliso told officer in September that she purchased the turtles from a broker in California, as Pet Pulse previously reported.

This information came just weeks after a salmonella outbreak in Los Angeles County was announced on Sept. 23.

Over 100 people, mostly children, were affected by the same strain of the disease. Twenty-four people had to be hospitalized, KNBC reported.

"We should honor the fact that the FDA and the Center for Disease Control have put this ban into effect for a reason," Kenagy said. "Turtles are notorious carriers of salmonella, and little kids can easily get sick from it. And when little kids get sick, they often get very very sick."

that is very sad that these baby turtles had to die, they could of been treated, let the owner foot the bill, than put in a sactuary or something, they just didn't have to die.
I have a red eared slider that I"ve had 24 years this comming October, he was a birthday gift from my sister. He never made me sick and he was aslso as big as a quarter when I got him.

I have a turtle and he had it... He almost died but I took him to the vet the next day. It got he like paralyzed and I was soo scared! And then he stayed for a few days and when I saw him again he was WAY bigger! See that thing keeps the turtles small... Most turtles that are being selled in the streets have it. So if you gonna buy one like that or just got one bring him to the vet fast before that happens.

This story is bull. Salmonella lives in the intestinal tract of nearly every living creature, along with plenty of other nasty bacteria.
Of course the turtles are going to test positive for it!
The 4in law only applies to the turtles being sold as pets. They could have been transferred to a sanctuary.
They need to worry more about the peanut contamination. Or the fact that most chicken and beef is teeming with salmonella and e-coli due to poor regulations.

Dang. How did one residence have over 700 of them? That's way to many for a breeder. So sad they all carried salmonella.

I have a red ear that I got when he was about 1" across. All that raising them without transmitting salmonella is to teach the kids to WASH their hands after touching the turtle, and NEVER, NEVER to put the turtle in their mouth.

its sad they had to be killed, also that this person had so many of them. people dont realize the care it takes when you have turtles. i know a lady who rescue turtles and its a lot of hard work. they are not as easy to care for as people think. leave the wildlife in the wild. they might not have had the salmanila if he knew what he was doing.

They could have treated the salmonella but I agree with the humane disposal of these animals. Red ear sliders have been taking over our enviroment here on the west coast. They have all but run the western pond turtles from the face of this earth. I seems if a species is making another extinct then the species should be eradicated from the area. That is why red eared sliders are illegal there anyway. People let them go all over the place. They have invaded all the ponds and lakes here in california. Shoot we treated a giant one at a Vet I worked at that craweled out of an irrigation ditch and into the road. We took it to a private pond where it wont be a harm to other animals.

That's sad. But why kill them release them to the wild. I'm sure all of them have the bacterium and live fine with it. It's only when people mess with them that it's a issue. Leave the turtles alone!

Why? Thats not right! Those baby turtles didn't have to die. I had one as a pet for over ten years and I am just fine. They could have let the turtles grow a few more inches and honor life. How can people be so sick? Exactly how many baby turtles were killed because of their size??????????

It sounds like they took the easy way out of euthanizing because they didn't know what to do with them. It's a shame, but since they couldn't legally leave the state, it was probably all they could do

Admittedly, I'm not sure what they intended to do with them anyway, but don't most reptiles have a chance of carrying salmonella? You'd think that there'd be an option besides just euthanizing all of them.

Horrible, in every way you can think. The person selling these poor creatures is an idiot who will likely spread disease & the poor turtles were killed because of something that wasn't even their fault!

If you search the internet for turtle forums you will find some helpful communities. I know one very well but I am probably not allowed to say who they are here.

I have had my turtle for five years. He is really cool. He probably doesnt have salmonella or I would have been sick by now...I guess.

Wash your hands people!

I think the breeding and selling of turtles is what has gotten out of hand. I work in a vet and if we see ten turtles a week eight or nine of their owners have no idea how to care for them and were given wrong information from the pet store. And the ban for turtles smaller than four inches is to prevent kids from swallowing the small turtles

I feel bad for the turtles but more importantly this is another story about a person who doesn't want to go out and get a real job. Instead has to try and make a buck off of an illegal buisness. If the courts don't start and set a prescedent and throw the book hard at these losers then nothing will ever change.

I don't get why there are so many issues with turtles. People don't use common sense and keep the pets in dirty water and probably don't wash their hands after handling them. WASH YOUR HANDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
