Supporting Shelter: Washington Area Humane Society

Supporting Rescue: Going Home Greyhounds

Pros: Put on the political and corporate pressure to really get some stuff done! Also, they provide grants to smaller animal welfare causes

Cons: wish they gave more grants to local shelters and rescues (since they are SOOOOO wealthy!)

I know that there are those among us in the animal lover community who hate HSUS because their employees are WELL-paid, they "spend too much time and money lobbying", etc. Well, you know what- I actually like HSUS (and I am usually very cynical and distrusting of large organizations!). I am sure that "the wrong thing" occurs in this nonprofit- just as corruptions exist with any other organization- but I admire their campaign strategies to raise public awareness about animal welfare issues and then (often) effective, aggressive stances with politician, corporations, and people in power. They get things done! For example, who got Nike to drop Michael Vick merchandise? HSUS did! Anyways, I do want to take a moment to defend HSUS from the aforementioned criticisms that I often hear from people who are anti-HSUS. 1) Yes, HSUS staff get paid really well- and they should. These are tough jobs that require very savvy workers, and that degree of professionalism and expertize MUST be compensated financially or else no one with any brains or ability would work for them!!!!!!!! Plus. they can afford it. Their yearly net assets total $1 BILLION- (check out charitynavigator.com to read their tax returns, financial info, etc. ) 2) Ya, they spend most of their money on ads/campaigns/lobbying/etc. That's just what they do though. Teh HSUS is not a giant animal shelter. . . it is a group that is ideally working to put an end to the suffering of animals via pet abuse/overpopulation,the meat industry, vivisection, fur trade, poaching, etc. SOMEONE has to speak for the animals to people in power! And people in power sometimes listen to HSUS. So yes, its worth it.

Someone has to do the lobbying. A great organization can't just care for the animals but for all animals everywhere. They do great work.

The USA is a capitalistic society. Without the money, and the influence, and size of HSUS, animal abuses would be where they were 100 years ago. The USA would be totally in the dark ages for animals. Animals can’t pay; they have no money.
I remember in my youth the only animal shelter people were aware of was the SPCA. Now look at ZooToo and the many animal shelters represented here.
HSUS does get things done. There is much, much more to accomplish too. And the HSUS isn't the only one to get it done. But if they have the backing of 10,000,000 people, I have a feeling that people representing other shelters also donate to the HSUS. I know I feel no shame in donating to the HSUS.
Although HSUS was in the front, more animal-love groups were involved in the Mike Vick case than only HSUS, and I am glad of it.
The animals are innocent.

I wasn't so much criticizing HSUS myself, as I was defending them from the criticisms I had read from so many others. HSUS has accomplished great things, but people tend to get their own ideas of what they should and shouldn't do with their money, which leads to them being criticized by some.
