Horrible for Chinchillas

posted 4 years ago

Please stop feeding your chinchilla a high sugar diet! You're literally killing them with your kindness. This is nothing but low nutrition junk food.

The chinchilla's GI tract is made to handle the sparse, fibrous plant material found in the chinchilla's native environment, it's not equipped for foods rich in fat or sugar. Excess sugar in their diet can lead to diarrhea, severe digestive distress, seizures, bloat, malnutrition, liver damage (Hepatic Lipidosis), pancreatitis, tooth decay, and the list goes on.

The more you give them sweet treats the less apetite they will have for their essential staples: a quality pellet, fresh hay, and filtered water. Let me put this in human terms. If you feed your human child only what they want, burgers, fries, ice cream, etc., they are going to be thrilled about it but you know you are doing serious long term harm to their health by doing it. The same goes for your fur babies. Please put their health first!

Pros: They love the taste of them

Cons: High sugar content is detrimental to chinchilla health
