What a Chinchilla Needs
posted 3 years ago
This is one of the top 3 pellets for your chinchilla. The problem with so many chinchilla mixes sold at the big chains are the treats they include. To feed them is like taking your human child to McDonald's every day for every meal. They love you for it but they aren't going to be healthy. The worst part is the sugar content in many of these foods. Sugar is the enemy of your chin's gut. It boosts unhealthy bacteria levels and often leads to bloat, a possibly fatal condition.
I'm a staff member of a chinchilla forum and often get asked what to feed them. Chinchillas benefit most from a quality alfalfa-based pellet like Oxbow makes. Among the top 3 pellets, this one often seems preferred by chins for it's fresh flavor. I will note that some older chins and special needs chins benefit from a timmy-based pellet because of lower protein levels but the majority of chins out there just thrive on a feed like this. You can get Oxbow pellets at vets' offices, feed stores, smaller pet stores, and many online retailers. Take the extra minute or two to find it, pay the few extra dollars, and love your pet for a long time.
Pros: The quality fiber and protein your chin needs to be healthy
Cons: Some bags are a bit crumbly

Simply perfect.

I started my chinchilla off on Mazuri brand which is easily available from breeders and from major pet chain stores. I found that the brand was okay but I kept getting dust mites in it even if it was kept in perfect conditions.
I reviewed this food and switched my chinchilla to it. He eats more of this and I researched to find that Oxbow is a great quality company that tries to match the diets perfectly.
The food is always fresh, the mill dates are good, and there's very little dust in the bottom proving that it doesn't sit around for a long time.
It is the most fortified product for chinchillas out there at the time but the access to it is little. However recently it has been showing up in more stores. Request it! They usually WILL order it.
Pros: Easily digestible, chins love it, fresh quality product
Cons: Hard to find, expensive
