Only feed to baby or nursing guinea pigs
posted 5 years ago
Alfalfa hay, packaged by any distributor should only be given to select guinea pigs. Babies, up to 6 months of age and nursing mothers are the only guinea pigs that should ever eat alfalfa due to it's high calcium content. Excess calcium leads to bladder and kidney stones often require surgery to remove them. I would go so far as to say pellets should also be timothy based, rather than alfalfa based. My concerns about alfalfa hay is not an indication of this product. It is packaged well and contains a fresh product. If you have babies or nursing guinea pigs, I would recommend LM Animal Farms Alfalfa Hay KOb, but not for other guinea pigs.
Pros: good for select groups of guinea pigs
Cons: High calcium can lead to bladder/kidney stones
