Rethinking the way we treat animals
posted 4 years ago
If you love animals but have never thought much about the impact of your eating, clothing, and/or entertainment habits on them, this book will open your eyes. Karen Dawn does a fantastic job of describing the political and economic history of how we arrived at many of the practices we routinely engage in relative to animals in food production, clothinging production, science, and entertainment.
Just beneath the surface of our "civilized" society is the heart of cruelty. The rampant pain and suffering that we cause animals largely exists because "there's a market for it". In other words, the way we spend our money supports it.
This is a thought provoking and surprisingly easy read (lots of text boxes and picture, cartoons, etc) that elucidates the issues.
Pros: Explains the economics of animal treatment
Cons: Hard descriptions of treatment of animals in industries

Good for Advocacy
posted 4 years ago
I have "Thanking the Monkey" by Karen Dawn. I first got it out of the library and then had to buy it!
I cannot say enough about this book. It covers all aspects of cruelty to animals...and what to do about it. Some are circus, lab animals, factory farming, puppy mills, animal fighting, fur... I especially welcomed advice as to how to advocate for the animals. Contacting legislators and speaking, writing with facts, dignity...no hysteria or anger.
Karen Dawn also has an excellent newsletter. Subscribe at: http://www.DawnWatch.com
I also have "Farm Sanctuary" by Gene Bauer. These two books are by main resource, reference for information.
Pros: Great resource of info animal cruelty
Cons: None

A reference resource animal rights
posted 4 years ago
Karen Dawn wrote a very good book here about the rights of animals.
She is descriptive about how animals are used in research, puppy mills, factory farming, etc., without being that graphic. Meaning, it is tolerable to read for those who find it very difficult to read of things done to animals. And she uses a lot of humor too.
The book is a major resource for how to change the system for animal welfare. A must for every animal lover.
Pros: Not graphic
Cons: None
