Shell Free Mix Is A Good Blend And Buy For Wild Birds
posted 5 years ago
"Shell Free" bird food is more accurately named than what others call "Waste-Free" (since they are not). But even this "shell-free" blend that offers "less waste and mess at feeders" is a BIT "too wasteful" because of the large amount of millet.
I DO like this brand very much and find that it is one of the BEST prices I've seen for such a high-quality blend (despite the millet). The wild birds LOVE this and really have nothing to complain about!
The 20 pound bag sells for about $20.00 at Tractor Supply. So, this is a large bag of a GOOD blend of nuts/seeds for a very reasonable price--and available at a Tractor Supply store that is less than ONE mile from my home.
The one drawback of the large pieces of nuts (e.g., walnuts, almonds, peanuts, and even pumpkin seeds) is that they are not suitable for most birdfeeders since they would clog the openings. I use the tray off of a broken feeder, but it would be nice if there were bird feeders with larger openings to accommodate this type of food.
Pros: Preferred Nuts/Seeds For Many Wild Birds; Reasonably Priced Large Bag
Cons: Contains large nut pieces (e.g., almonds, walnuts) which canNOT be used in most feeders; Too much millet
