Kaytee has fresh thistle seed

posted 5 years ago

Thistle is great for goldfinch and house finch, nuthatch and other songbirds.
It is really great in an upside down feeder for goldfinch as then sparrows don't get to it, but ours broke so we are using a regular right side up tube feeder.

We have tons of goldfinch in our "city" yard since we put in the thistle feeder. Caution though, be sure you do not put it in fence rows or like so that it encourages thistle weeds to grow. We put landscaping clothe and bricks in a row next to the fence row, then plants in landscaping cloth and started our flower beds a couple of feet away from the honey suckle and tall bushes so that we don't have to be pulling the thistle weeds out of the flower beds next to the fence.

Birds love it and the first year we had a couple of goldfinch, now we have tons and they seem to increase every year.

Pros: Fresh thistle, available in local pet chain stores

Cons: Can buy it cheaper in bulk at feed store if one is near you

Attracts Finches

posted 5 years ago

This thistle seed is great for attracting finches. When I feed it I always get finches in the yard in the evening. I would recommend only putting a little out at a time as in humid weather it will go mouldy in the feeder.

Pros: Attracts Finches

Cons: Goes mouldy in humid weather
