I have a couple leather leads with chains in my trailer and I usually dont use them because the chain can be unsafe if you just use it to clip to the halter. I use it a shows or when my horse seems unusually frightened, just to keep their attention on me...I clip the snap on the ring by the eye and then run it through the rings under the chin and clip it on the ring on the other side of the chin. I find this is better than over the nose.

Pros: Works when you need it

Cons: If it is only clipped to halter it can be dangerous

I have a leather chain lead rope I rarely use. Cause it slips through my fingers. But this is the type most popular at horse shows. The chain enhances the sturdieness even if you don't have it over the nose.

Pros: It good to have around

Cons: Leather can be slippery

We used these only when we were in the show ring on our halter horses.

Pros: Nice leather

Cons: don't like chain
