The Chicken Book

A great read
posted 6 years ago
In The Chicken Book you will find chapters on the history of the chicken (people have been keeping chickens since before recorded history), the chicken in language and folklore, mythology, art, and music. Most interesting to those of us who abhor factory farming are several chapters tracing the evolution of chicken keeping from the small family flock to the huge, impersonal egg factory of today including a very enlightening chapter about the strange boom times when chickens were the small businessmans dream - or nightmare.
You cannot read this book without learning something, or many things and developing a much finer appreciation of an animal that has shared their lives with human beings for literally hundreds of years.
There are also the practical chapters on chicken care, breeds, and even recipes for chickens and eggs. In short, everything you ever wanted to know about chickens, as well as much you never even thought about, is in this book. And the result is a delightful œchicken stew that you may savor over and over.
Pros: full of interesting information
Cons: not the right book for practical care
