A fun and fairly easy way to train your cats.

posted 5 years ago

This is an excellent resource for teaching your cats to do tricks and to perform behaviors that you want them to do. It also provides really great mental stimulation which can be helpful in wearing your pet out. :)

The book explains how to clicker train your pet, which is very straightforward. It does take some time to do, but our cats love being clicker trained. It's very hard to mess up clicker training because the behaviors can always be re-shaped with some work. And there is no negative reinforcement that will scare the cat away.

With the help of clicker training our cats can now:
wave
shake
give high fives
give Eskimo kisses
stay
spin (clockwise circle)
twirl (counter-clockwise circle)
beg
hop
pinky swear

These are other tricks I'm certain I'm missing.

The added bonus is that when your cat is doing something you don't want you can reward them for stopping even if you don't have a clicker handy. Our cats realize that a click can come from the clicker or from us by using our tongues and will wait for their reward. So while it needs to be an instantaneous reward when you start the clicker training, it gives you a little bit of leeway down the road.

Pros: The method of training is quite simple and very effective.

Cons: Like all training, it takes some time and work and isn't instant.

A very interesting book

posted 5 years ago

I have never liked the idea of the squirt bottle or any of those type of training methods. I believe redirecting a cat and positive reinforcement are much more humane and work better with a cat. This woman uses a method which is based on the whistles and targeting they use with dolphins. You 'click' for a good behavior (and treat) and then build on that behavior. The first thing she suggests is that you get the cat to nose or paw a target and then move on from there. I am very excited about it--I am not looking to train a cat to do tricks. But, for safety reasons, I would like to have getting into the kennel to be a simple process and not a struggle--things like that. When I asked at a couple of our local pet supply stores, they looked at me like I was from another planet when I asked for a clicker. So, I have ordered one online and clicker training will begin upon its arrival!

Pros: I love the gentle behavior modification/training idea

Cons: I'm not sure I'll be able to do this
