Purina Equine Senior - My rehab favorite
posted 4 years ago
Purina Equine Senior has helped rehabilitate my foster horses, who arrived severly starved and neglected. It thoroughly dissolves so even if bolted down it poses the least risk of blockage. It is a complete feed, not a grain, so it safely helps put weight on. It is easily comsumed by horses whose teeth have been neglected. It can even be served as a soup, with warm water so toothless horses can slurp it up.
Purina Equine Senior comes in 50 pound bags is easy to serve small amounts throughout the day to help the starved horse's digestive system spool back up. The horses love this feed so much that a handful can be given as a treat to any of my horses. It helped rehabilitate my 30 something foster horse as well as my 6 year old foster horse, so much so that I just had to adopt them both myself! They now have beautiful coats, plenty of energy and a twinkle in their eyes again. I only wish it were cheaper, but it is worth every penny.
Pros: Complete feed, easily digested, well utilized
Cons: Available in 50 pound bags

Not a good feed for many senior horses
posted 5 years ago
It has senior plastered all over it and I was hoping to prolong the life of my older horse by choosing a food that fit his needs. He didn't gobble it up like he did other foods and his coat actually got worse. He seemed to be doing worse on it so we switched back to just a grain mix with supplements.
Pros: The bag reads like it is great and the ingredients look OK
Cons: My horse did very poorly with this feed

Good Senior feed but watch NSC content for IR horses!
posted 4 years ago
This is a great food for senior horses with no medical issues except maybe needing some extra weight or needing complete feed for lack of teeth... I fed a foster horse with NO matching teeth this as the 100% feed and it was great - EXCEPT looking back - the NSC content is probably what kept us from getting her sound (she was foundered when we got her and now we suspect she was probably IR - insulin resistant)... the food was good in that she kept her weight but I think the food also kept her having massive feet problems.. I just didn't know enought at the time!
Even the "low NSC" feeds are not always low.. needs to be less than 12-14 to really be considered low. The biggest clue is sugar, molasses, grains etc.. all of those the carbohydrates turn into sugar which in turn harms horses that have IR...
In summary - good for some bad for others...
Pros: Good Complete feed, very palitable, helps get weight back on senior horses
Cons: High NSC content, dangerous for some horses

THis is good stuff
posted 5 years ago
This food is expensive but it's worth every penny. We bought my barrel horse when I was 9 yrs old, I am now 30. You do the math (21 years I've had him). My horse is now 28 years old and still going strong. He's retired but he's as happy as can be in the pasture. I retired him when he was 19. My other horse lived to 31. I feel that equine senior is the main reason our horses live as long as they do. It really helps to keep the weight on them :)
Pros: my horse loves it
Cons: expensive

We love our Strategy feed. Have been feeding it for over 5 years. We own and operate a training and showing facility with 31 horses. The program works well for young and old horses.
Pros: low in sugar, you can feed less
Cons: none
