Know the breed tendencies

posted 5 years ago

I had a neighbor with a border collie -- these folks were nice people, but animal ignorant. They did just about everything wrong: didn't clean the pen, left the dog confined nearly all day, changed the food to whatever was on sale, yelled at the dog when they did let it out (was full of energy -- go figure!). I worked with them and their elementary aged son to socialize this pet, improve the conditions of his run, get them to walk/play with him, etc. My involvement was not enough. The son was walking this dog with a friend -- the boys were talking and laughing. The dog interpreted something wrong and attacked the friend. The friend got stitches and the dog was euthenized.

This pre-dates my work with local rescue groups. I now know to EDUCATE potential adoptors on high energy working dogs like collies, huskies, etc. We need to give adoptors the tools to be successful AND be able to say 'no' when we see that a potential adoptor is going to be a poor fit for that particular dog or breed of dog...

Pros: love the breed

Cons: need to educate potential owners/adoptors

I need their "Mute" book.

posted 5 years ago

I need to expand my vocabulary in "Mute" so that Klondike and I can have more meaningful chats.

I just know he's not telling me everything, but I am deficient in my "Leut" or "Mute" and can't seem to get the whole story out of him.

If their Mute book is as good as this one on Bordie Collies, I'll have him singing like a canary !!

Pros: Valuable Info

Cons: none

More boring then the book

posted 5 years ago

i have had border collies so i am pretty familar with the breed. but this book is a must for first time owners. they must understad that they must keep them busy or they will find something to busy themselves with. and you probably won't like it. they are the genious of the dog world and you must understand that if you are going to have one

Pros: good info

Cons: boring title for a great dog
