Draken lost a shoe and the farrier couldn't get to him right away. He recommended calling Afton Farrier Supply and getting Equicast. You get Equicast wet and then wrap it around the hoof. Once you get the hoof wrapped you pick up the other hoof - this allows the wrapped hoof to flex before the cast dries and thus there are no problems with weird hoof growth. It takes just a couple of minutes to dry and can stay on for several weeks.

It worked great for Draken - kept him from going lame and it was easy to take off when the farrier came. We now carry one in our spares kit for emergency use.

I understand it is used by farriers as a safe, alternative to shoes in treating horses with chronic conditions.

Cons: When they tell you to use gloves - they mean it!
