Masta Deluxe Heavyweight Turnout Blanket, Blue/silver swirls
posted 4 years ago
I bought this blanket on a whim because it was such a bargain, and because it was a pretty color and pattern. Well, I am quite impressed with its quality and durability, and extra features that blankets didn't have when I was first buying them back in the 1970s.
It's a heavyweight winter turnout, so a lot is called for -- anti-chafe fleece at the withers, shoulder gussets, a tail skirt, waterproof outer layer -- but it adds extras. The double-buckle front also has velcro, so it doesn't slip, and the ends of the "belts" slip into keepers, so they are not waving around. The cross-surcingles that go under the belly actually go into reinforced holes near the edges of the blanket. The fabric does not seem to retain dirt the way some of the other horses' blankets do -- and, best part, I can pick him out a mile away, in his sky blue with silver swirls (not like the same-old navy or dark green that a lot of others wear).
This is our third season with the blanket. It did get a rip from an aggressive herdmate, now gone elsewhere, and needed repair, but otherwise exhibits no wear and tear whatsoever. With the exception of the elastic straps for the tail clips -- they stretched out pretty quick. But that is the only flaw.
Finally, a note on fit: I got Tally a really really expensive turnout to begin with (even on sale, it cost two or three times what this one did) and it turned out not to fit him. It must have been made for a slabsided lanky TB and not a round Morgan. But the Masta fits him very well.
Pros: Durable, eye-catching, lots of features
Cons: Elastic tail snaps stretched out

Good for really cold weather.

This is a great blanket. My daughter in law gets in horses that sometimes are very thin. She has two of these and uses them often. I felt under the blanket of a horse that was painfully thin and she was warm and toasty. It was this heavy weight blanket and I will be donating 1 of these to them for their winter season!
Pros: Good for keeping horses warm
Cons: none

Good quality blanket

I don't have to use my heavy weight blanket often, but when I do I'm really glad to have it. I have a difficult time fitting my Arab, but this blanket fits pretty well. Keeps him warm on those cold days.
Pros: Good quality, heavy, fits well
Cons: None
