In most waters, bicarbonate salts form part of the total water hardness. These bicarbonate salts make up the carbonate hardness (KH) value. Bicarbonates have an important function in the overall chemistry of aquarium water. They act as a pH buffer, preventing sudden and potentially harmful changes in the acidity or basicity of the water. Where bicarbonates are deficient (i.e., a low KH value), the release of acidic substances from the natural decomposition of organic material can cause a dangerous reduction in the pH of the water. The higher the KH the better the pH buffering, but a very high value can result in the water becoming highly basic.
