They are convienant to use. Just slide the filter sleeve on and add the carbon. It comes with a clip to keep everything together. Rinse the cartridge under running water thoroughly to remove the black dust from the carbon, the just slip it right into the filter. I have two big plecostomus and I feed them zuccini and therefore, my filter bag gets clogged up in about 2 weeks. I just take it out and lightly scape the slime off the bag, and reverse it and it's fine for the next two weeks. If you are treating the tank with medication, just add the sleeve without the carbon and that's it.
