If you are just setting up your aquarium there is no bacteria. It's sterile. As soon as you add fish and feed them, there will be a huge rise in ammonia, which makes the tank smell and clouds the water and kills the fish. This product adds the proper bacteria needed to convert ammonia into nitrites and then nitrates, which is safe for the fish. It would normally take a couple of months with one or two fish to do this work. This product makes it safe to have more fish without them dying. It's safe for fresh and salt water aquariums and can be bought at petstores.
