When I kept fish, I always kept one package of these on hand in case I wanted to leave for a weekend trip. I really was unsure when I first bought this, but thought I would give it a try based on the confidence of the salesperson at the pet store where I bought it. The person working there was a friend of mine, so I had not reason to doubt their motives. I was amazed, you drop it in when you leave, and by the time you come back it is totally dissolved (or may be just a bit left) and the little pieces of food that were embedded in it have been slowly dispensed to your fish. I thought it was so cool, I was just bummed I was not there to watch it dissolve, so I used one once when I was home so I could see exactly how it worked. It is very convenient when you have other pets that will be with you, or at the boarder's, or don't have other pets. They also have different types available for longer trips. I start to get less confident, the longer the trip. Fish can do fine for a day or even two without food, but if something goes wrong without anyone checking on them . . .

The fish are happy when I drop one of these in the tank. It not only feeds them, it seems to keep them somewhat entertained. Some of them will hover over it waiting for food to be released. It works great while we are away for short trips.
