These do help stop the water from siphoning back out of your tank into your air pump and even onto your floor if you have a power outage.
Pros: Stops from ruining your pump
Cons: Sometimes go bad

The water will never be able to flood back to you air pump and flood your house.
Pros: Ok it works but
Cons: If you air pump is above your fish tank
