The Drinkwell "Big Dog" gets an A+ in our book!

posted 5 years ago

www.vetventures.com

We purchased ours from Amazon.com. I believe you can purchase them at PetsMart or PetCo.

When Chester's urinary tract issues flared up again last month and C took him into see the vet, while he was there, they discussed the automatic water bowls with the filters. Our vet said they were very good for encouraging more drinking of water which in turn would encourage more tinkling. As you can guess more tinkling is better for his system because it is being "flushed" out more often and less chance of urinary crystal build up. I did a lot of research online and decided to go with the Drinkwell brand as they had many positive reviews. I decided with as many animals as we have, we mine as well go ahead and get a BIG fountain. My logic was one big bowl is better than multiple small ones in our tiny over crowded house.

All cat urinary tract talk aside WE LOVE THIS BOWL. All of the cats are fascinated with it, we have one who loves to drink directly out of the stream (hilarious noises come from that), we have another who likes to paw and bite at the stream of water. In our house of a beagle, a dachshund and 4 cats of various sizes, no one has trouble reaching the bowl and everyone likes it. Best of all this thing will hold A LOT of water, which is a plus with so many thirsty animals, I only have to refill the water reservoir about once a week. Our vet was right too, I have noticed them drinking more. Plus, it just makes me feel better to know I am giving them filtered/oxygenated water instead of stagnate water in a bowl. I am a nerd though and feel my furkids should be treated like my human child and given all the best! Oh and Wyatt (one of our cats) would always knock the water bottle over on the larger regular bottle water bowls. Talk about a mess....ugh! This one he has not tried to knock over once, I think it is because the reservoir is much smaller and less tempting to knock over.

It was really easy to set up out of the box and cleaning it is easy too. I normally rinse it out in the kitchen sink every other week with some warm soapy water. (this could vary depending on your location and water quality) The filters it uses are easy to put in and are not priced to bad $6 to $8 for a pack of three. It recommends to change them every 2 to 4 weeks but again that could depend on water quality and also how messy your animals are when drinking.

The only draw backs I can see for someone would be:

a) it has to be near and electrical outlet (the cord is a lot longer than I thought it would be and gives you plenty of reach)

b) it has a large foot print. it basically covers most of a "cat mat" (the type you put under food bowls)

c)the noise it makes - In my opinion it is VERY quiet, a lot quieter than I imagined it to be. The motor makes no noise at all and basically all you have is a trickle of water sound. We have had fish tanks in our house and we are used to a watery back ground noise. It does not bother us at all and we consider it quiet but I can see how some people might not like the noise.

All in all our house gives the Big Dog Fountain a tremendous A+ - we like it, our pets like it and well it's just really cool.

Pros: Easy Setup, easy clean, our animals love the fountain

Cons: for some people possibly the noise

Drinkwell Platinum Big Dog

posted 6 years ago

It kills me that this didn't work out for Riley. Daily he stands at the tub waiting for fresh water. So I thought the Drinkwell Big Dog was the way to go. I bought it for Christmas for him, and he was afraid of it. Eventually he got over his fear, but he refused to drink from the free-falling water. After he would drink, a layer of slobber would sit at the top of the bowl, and the water circulation would do nothing to remove the scum. Also the instructions state to clean every two weeks. Well within 2 days, the water smelled terrible. But to clean it, you have to dump all of the water out, take it apart, and wash every part separately. It's huge and difficult to maneuver. I gave it one last try after a month, and I put out a regular bowl and the Drinkwell. Riley would only drink from the bowl. So between the difficulty of cleaning and his preference of drinking from a bowl, this Drinkwell is going up for sale. To be fair, I think a smaller Drinkwell would have suited us well. We have a Petmate fountain for our cats, and we love it. It's much smaller, so it's very easy to clean. And it really does a good job of keeping the water fresh. So I may try a smaller Drinkwell in the future.

Pros: It's great for dogs who like fresh water from the sink

Cons: It was hard to clean and started to smell in 2 days

Almost big enough

I guess my dog can mess with any indoor watering device so even this didn't work for us. too bad- it gets cats to drink more than they would normally.

Pros: easier to clean

Cons: doesn't work for water diggers

Great way to water the pets.

posted 5 years ago

I bought my pets the Big Dog Drinkwell for Christmas. I ended up choosing this one over the Drinkwell Platinum because it holds a lot more water.

So far, my pets really seem to be enjoying their new watering dish. My cats like drinking out of the stream of water.

I'm glad I purchased it!

Pros: Clean, fresh tasting water for the pets, works for dogs & cats, plenty big for multiple-pet household

Cons: None so far.

I have 3 cats and one lab/rottie mix. The cats have started to drink LOTS more water--no more UTIs. the dog likes the flowing motion.

Pros: large capacity, easy to refill

Cons: none
