Freshpet Dog Joy Sweet Potato Treats are a favorite with our canine reviewer.

January 20, 2012 12:33 am | By Zootoo Editor AmyLi

Freshpet Dog Joy Sweet Potato Treats were a surprising find and sudden favorite with our reviewer pooch. There isn't a long ingredient list or anything fancy that goes into making these treats. These snacks just feature sweet potatoes, sliced and slow-baked, in all of their simple, delicious glory.

I initially thought our tester dog would turn her nose away from the Dog Joy Sweet Potato Treats almost instantly, but she considered one of them. And then she devoured it, easily tearing it into little pieces that became very chewy, though not mushy, once she got it in her mouth.

Freshpet Dog Joy Sweet Potato Treats are sliced in different sizes with the skin on, conveniently allowing you to decide how big or small the treat should be depending on the situation. Also, your dog may take a bit of time to really get into one of the slices, making snacking something of an activity. Like all sweet potatoes, these dried treats are “rich,” as the packaging says, in beta carotene, vitamin C, and dietary fiber. And like all Freshpet goods, the treats should be kept refrigerated.

I must say, though, that our tester dog quickly picked up the habit of stashing these treats away in different places of the house, unbeknownst to me, and returning to them at a later, hungrier hour. And she had no problems digesting them after they had been sitting out for a few hours, or even a day, but that doesn’t mean every dog will have the same experience. All in all, I felt great about dishing these treats out to my dog, and she seemed thrilled to be receiving them.

Pros: Variety of sizes, easy to chew, completely natural.

Cons: None.

I have 3 cats and they love this food. They eat less and walk away with a full belly. Eating less means pooping less and less litter. All around a great choice for my cats.
