Toys to Swear By

posted 6 years ago

At nine months old, my puppy Kennedy has finished teething, but still chews like a fiend. When we first welcomed him home at ten weeks old, he had a Puppy Kong, a stuffed turtle we named "Honu" that squeaked and boasted little rope toy legs, a Nylabone Puppy Starter Kit, and the proverbial rope toy.

Months passed. "Honu" was laid to rest, sans legs, squeaker pulled out and stuffing strewn all over the floor. The Puppy Kong was eventually missing little chunks of rubber and had to be thrown away. The proverbial rope toy was somehow untied and joined Puppy Kong in the dumpster. The Healthy Edibles Bacon Flavored Bone in the Nylabone Puppy Starter Kit was partially eaten and thoroughly thrown up fifteen minutes later, and the flexible Puppy Bone had to be thrown away the day we bought it.

Of all of the toys Kennedy started out with [and some others that were collected along the way], only the Chicken Flavored Durable Bone found in the Nylabone Puppy Starter lasted up until now. We replaced that with the Nylabone Big Chews Knot for Big Dogs, and since he can't have rawhide — he's got bad food allergies — it's a rarity for him to have a satisfying chew session on a bone that won't make him throw up, itch all over, or have diarrhea.

I'd also recommend this for crate training. Kennedy used to suck and chew the corner of his crate pad when he was left alone for a few hours; now he chews his Nylabone toys until he falls asleep and we don't have to worry that he's swallowed anything.

Pros: It doesn't aggravate his allergies, keeps him busy when I'm not able to actively play with him, stands up to his insane chewing, and doesn't leave the mess that rawhide often does.

Cons: I honestly can't think of a single one. If the flavor doesn't appeal to your dog — it didn't to Kennedy at first — I would suggest soaking it in chicken broth for a few hours and warming it up prior to the first chew. It sounds crazy, but it worked!

Withstands my dogs' heavy chewing

posted 5 years ago

We have several items from the Nylabone Big Chew line, but this is one of their favorites. All of the Big Chews are very durable and withstand lots of heavy chewing. Big Chews are the only chew toys (besides the Extreme Kongs) that I can safely give my dogs. The Big Chew Knot is a favorite because each end has the twisted knot that they love to chew on. In addition, the size is perfect for them to carry around....they look very cute when they bring it to me to play. The Knot is not as heavy as some of the other Big Chews, which is a great advantage to my feet and toes that have been crushed many times by the heavier Big Chews. Not all pet stores carry the Big Chews line, or if they do, it may be a limited selection. I've ordered mine online from companies that carry the full line so I can get a variety of Big Chews. They're more expensive than the regular "durable" Nylabone products, but they last a whole lot longer. Love the Big Chews!

Pros: Durable and provides a safe outlet for chewing needs

Cons: None

Great for powerful chewers

posted 6 years ago

I have one lab who is a very powerful chewer and makes quick work out of just about any toys but these (even ones marked for powerful chewers). She has had one of these for 7 years now and is still working on it. It is her favorite treat and she carries it around with her all the time. It is affectionately referred to as her "nubby" since it is now half the size it originally was. She has another one from this line that, while not her favorite, is a close second. These are slightly on the expensive side if not on sale, but well worth it when you take into consideration that she can make mush out of a $30 toy in 5-10 minutes. I figure I have more than gotten my moneys worth out of this!

Pros: Great bone for powerful chewers, dogs love them

Cons: Slightly expensive

Durable Nylabone...GREAT Bone for Chewers!

posted 6 years ago

This bone is great and my Labradors love it to the point that they are fighting over it, even though there are more than one in the house at a time. It keeps them busy for hours and it seems that they really like the taste. I would recommend this bone to anyone with a large dog that loves to chew.+

Pros: Very durable for heavy chewers

Cons: After a lot of chewing, the ends get sharp

Great for your high power chewer

posted 5 years ago

I have a powerful APBT chewer. A trainer told us about these years ago and we haven't been without one since.

My dog seems to prefer the taste or shape of the turkey leg and the wolf over the double knot and the galileo styles. She also loves the slightly less stronger bones, though they do not last nearly as long.

I used the nylabone to train my dog what was appropriate and inappropriate to chew on. As long as there is one around she happily picks it up and tosses it around before dragging it over to her bed to chew on it.

Pros: Tough, Long Lasting

Cons: Can be chewed into a sharp point
