A great everyday pack with excellent performance, fit, and functionality. Use it to offset your load, or for training and exercise. The Approach Pack gives your dog a load to carry and a job to do, generating instant four-legged motivation.

The Ruff Wear Approach Backpack makes both outdoor treks and urban excursions convenient.

September 22, 2010 11:30 pm | By Zootoo Editor Melba B.

Whether your dog is an avid adventurer or you're just eager to take the advice of TV trainers who endorse giving your pup a job to do, the Ruff Wear Approach Pack helps your dog carry her own gear. The Ruff Wear Approach Pack updates the classic saddlebag with a more streamlined shape. And the bag is oriented forward to assist with load bearing.

At first glance, the Approach seemed well made and attractive. For the price ($75), it should be. Seams were stitched securely and straps and hardware were solid. My dog didn't mind having the pack on his back at all—and the "Comfort-fit Web Master™ Harness" seemed comfortable and was easy to adjust. According to Ruff Wear, the Approach has a five-point adjustable fit and an extended size range to allow it to accommodate dogs of all sizes. We didn't have any trouble finding a snug fit for my dog, who has a deep chest and narrow waist.

Once secured, the Approach stayed in place. Even though it boasts a "streamlined, go-fast shape," it still took some time for my dog to adjust to his extra width. But after only a few minutes, it was like he wasn't wearing a pack at all! He's been able to wear it for long stretches of time, and fully loaded, without chafing or other signs of discomfort.

In a nutshell, we consider the Ruff Wear Approach Pack a great pick for extreme adventures and urban excursions alike.

Pros: Sturdy and well-constructed; doesn't chafe or cause discomfort.

Cons: Top quality comes at a high price; dogs may need time to adjust to the extra weight and width.

My dog wears a backpack when he helps me.

posted 5 years ago

This makes my dog useful and I can tell he feels like he has a purpose to help me. He settles down when this is on him.

Pros: The dog can carry water, poop bags, etc.

Cons: It gets furry fast and doesn't get washed as often as I'd like.
