Good for training when used properly
posted 7 years ago
These are used in novice obedience classes to train your dog to listen. Basically, some people throw it in front of the dog, or behind them, or at the dog's butt. In my class, it was most effective on the dog's butt. The idea is that the dog is ignoring you, continuing bad behavior. Then from out of nowhere, something smacks their butt, which gets their attention. Usually once they experience it, you never have to actually throw it at their butt again. The sound of it jingling in your pocket is enough for them to remember.
The dog shouldn't ever realize that you threw it at them, but instead that "god" or some other force smacked their butt. The timing is key as the dog should never see you throwing it, or picking it up.
We had to practice throwing it at leaves on the ground or something else when the dog could not see. Once you aim is good, then you can try using it on the dog.
It is important not to miss or hit the dog in other parts of the body that could harm it.
To get it to work, you have someone help you. Get a lure of some sort, like hot dogs cut into pieces. Then you have a leash. Walk the dog, then stand around aimlessly while the helper entices the dog with the hotdog bits. The helper should not give any commands, but just entice the dog. Once the dog goes for the lure, then you call it to you. If the dog ignores you and keeps eating the hotdog, you throw the throwchain. Some dogs respond right away, and others keep on eating. You may have to adjust how hard you throw it, or if you dog has a furry bottom and doesn't feel it. Tougher dogs sometimes need a heavier chain.
After that, you do it again, and most dogs won't even go for the lure as they are suspicious about the throw chain.
I recommend this to anyone who is willing to use it properly and not use it as a weapon to "beat up" your dog when it does something bad. Also, anyone who thinks that using it in the first place is cruel, should not use it either.

Also, I need to mention that using an old choke chain doesn't work. The dogs can tell the difference in the sound of the chain, and the weight isn't quite right.
Pros: Works well if used properly
Cons: It won't work if you throw it at the wrong time

I used one of these with a dog that would charge the front door everytime someone rang the doorbell. I throw the chain to the floor in front of her and she backs off. Won't harm your floor if you put it in a nylon sack, still makes the nosie.
Pros: good for training
