I would prefer keeping the dog in a crate if you are attempting to keep your dog safe. Your dog can still be thrown around the car should you get into an accident. Also, the dog's neck can get caught between the bars if it is attempting to reach something in the rear seat.
Pros: Will keep dog in back of vehicle
Cons: Does not keep dog safe if an accident occurs
