Konsyl has been very helpful for one of our dogs with painful, hard stools

posted 7 years ago

One of our dogs suffered a great deal of pain passing his stools when we first found him and took him in. He had prostate problems, so the vet. neutered him for us, and he apparently had scar tissue related to this, causing passage of stools to be painful. The vet. told us about Konsyl, giving our large dog a teaspoon twice a day with his food and a 1/2 cap ful of mineral oil with each meal too. Konsyl is just a bulk forming laxative consisting of psyllium fiber, and its been used for humans who can't take the form with sugar and flavoring because of diabetes. Our dog has had no problems with this dose for several years now, unfortunately we weren't able to decrease or remove them. As long as we've been faithful with the medication, he doesn't have pain, and his stools remain formed, but soft.

Pros: works to keep stools soft enough to prevent pain

Cons: expensive

I have 3 cats and they love this food. They eat less and walk away with a full belly. Eating less means pooping less and less litter. All around a great choice for my cats.
