This small book gives the history of sled dog use in the military starting with Bill Mitchell laying a telegraph line in Alaska to the French and Italians using them in WW1. Lots of photographs and illustrations. Great gift for those that have arctic breeds.

Military dog mushing in modern times, anyway - 17th-Century warfare among the natives of Siberia isn't included. ;-)

A very good book for people interested in northern breeds of dogs, their true performance in situations other than expeditions, and the equipment used to harness their amazing abilities!

The book should also be informative for people interested in military history, especially World War II.

It covers not only activities of the famous U.S. 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colorado, but of other U.S. bases and also the experiences of European countries.

Read about search and rescue missions for downed aircraft and experiments with different breeds (Newfoundlands!). See photos of dogs in harness and drawings of military sleds. Get this book!
