The Dog Door that Keeps me from going crazy

posted 4 years ago

After five moves with one large spoiled dog, we've become experts at installing PetSafe Pet Doors. Each time we move we install at least one. This time we ordered a replacement door, had the hole cut for the Freedom Aluminum Pet Door and we installed the pet door. We may take the entire exterior door with us and exchange it for the door we just removed.

Installation is easy, it always has been, and the instructions are clear and simple to follow. The pet door provides access to the outdoors when needed, but also access to the indoors when the weather is too hot, too cold or the disposition simply wants inside. I don't have to stop whatever I'm doing to go home and let our dog outside--this is parent freedom.

This features solid aluminum construction with an interior locking panel, a soft, transparent single flap, and it fits doors from 3/4 inches to two inches thick. Ours is large for dogs up to 100 pounds and it has a 10 1/2 x 15 3/4 inch flap opening. Over the years our doors have lasted longer than the flap so I recommend getting a second flap--just in case a puppy decides to chew it off the door. They're also easy to replace.

The flap is relatively heavy and has a strong magnet on the lower edge that keeps it closed. I don't worry about our cat getting out but I do advise securing it at night. It's amazing how many critters wander around outside at night, even in a large city. As far as I'm concerned this pet door is worth its weight in gold.

Pros: Pet freedom, Parent freedom

Cons: A large cat might push it open
