PPA - works as advertised
posted 6 years ago
Propalin is a branded form of phenylpropanolamine, or PPA.
In veterinary use, it's "recommended for the long-term management of urinary incontinence associated with uerthal sphincter incompetence in spayed dogs."
In the U.S., PPA is no longer available as a human drug due to causing strokes when taken as a decongestant or appetite suppressant.
PPA can also be used as the starting point for making illicit stimulants. My veterinarian told me that that's the reason it's made into such a large pill for dogs - it's packed with other stuff and harder to convert.
Gremlin's the only dog I've used PPA with, and it was quickly and completely effective for her.
She started "leaking" when she was a young adult. She didn't even realize it, sometimes - it even happened when she was asleep.
I was really worried, but my vet at the time recognized the problem as a common one and started her on PPA. (A different brand, back then.)
It's continued to work for her for the 10 years or so that she's been taking it, and it's been quite a relief for me.
Pros: Effective, chewable tablets (supposedly)
Cons: A large pill if the dog won't chew it!
