i do not believe dogs should live outside. i feel they should be part of the family. they are exposed to the elements, put in harms way and owners tend to neglect them. getting back to the petmate homested, medium and large dogs can move them around, climb on top of them and tip them over. they come apart easily and there is no protection from blowing wind, rain and snow. unless it is put in a shaded area, the inside is like an oven in the summer. they are an accident waiting to happen and can easily be chewed up or used as a toy for a dog left alone and bored. smaller dogs do not tolerate heat and cold and need to be kept indoors. regardless of how well they claim to be insulated, dogs outside need a good amount of straw for bedding. they are able to bury into the straw and straw wicks the moisture off the dogs fur. a flap over the door keeps out the weather. the bottom line is, if the dog can't reach it, if it's broken or tipped over, has water or snow on the floor and has no flap, IT'S INHUMANE & USELESS! at least provide a good sturdy doghouse that protects him or her.

I have one of these for my large Norwegian Elkhound for several years. It keeps him warm and sheltered with the help of straw around the house and in it in the dead of winter. It is very durable, an I consider it a very good investment.

I would never leave my dogs outside 24/7 so I cant vouch for that type of use, but for a couple of hours out in the backyard, its good shelter from the sun/snow whatever. My dogs like it.
