Purina Pro Plan Select combines top-quality ingredients with an irresistible flavor.
September 23, 2010 7:16 pm | By Zootoo Editor Flinn D.
Purina’s Barley and Natural Turkey formula is a canned dog food packed with added vitamins and minerals that adhere to Purina’s classic Pro Plan formula for your dog’s health. While Purina, like other dog food giants, has never exclusively used natural ingredients, the barley and natural turkey recipe does seem to be taking a step in the right direction.
Turkey, poultry broth, carrots, potatoes and liver are just a few of the natural ingredients that have been added to this Pro Plan recipe, and that is in addition to all the great vitamins and minerals that make the Pro Plan diet such a force to be reckoned with — such as E, D3 and B12.
Luckily, all these natural foods don’t make the product any less delicious for your dog. When I popped Purina’s Barley and Natural Turkey can open for our tester mutt he scarfed it down with enthusiasm. The container holds exactly enough food for your dog to finish it in one serving making further refrigeration unnecessary.
The texture and consistency is the perfect combination of broth and chunks of meat – not too soupy like other wet dog foods tend to be. Hats off to the folks at Purina for creating a dog food that is both affordable and uses some of the best natural ingredients on the planet. While I wish they used all-natural ingredients in all of their products, the fact that they are headed in this direction at all is enough for me for now.
Pros: Dogs will love the taste; you will love the high-quality nutrition.
Cons: None.

Tasty but...
posted 4 years ago
We used to take care of a friend's dog who eats this food, and he emitted lots of gas.
We used to always use the chicken and rice variety of proplan, and one time when they were out I got the turkey and Barley. Our big Old English, seemed to be extra gassy on this food. This is only two anecdotes, not a systematic study, but this food seems to make for extra gas.
Pros: tasty and pretty healthy food
Cons: causes flatulence?
