Best dry food that I've used thus far

posted 7 years ago

My dog is a very finicky eater, he has been through sooooo many dog foods in the past 5 months. This one however seems to be the one that sticks. I don't give him any type of wet food because I don't get a chance often enough to brush his teeth, so instead he figured out the alternative, which is drinking water while eating the food, or dribbling it on top of the food in his dish, to make the gravy. Dogs are smart little creatures and I like this food for that reason, if you don't do it for your dog, I guarantee they'll figure it out on their own. I love this food though for its nutritional value, literally you can open up the bag and see the veggies and fruits right there that have been freeze-dried. Apples, carrots, and peas. Very few foods have that to offer. The price is reasonable as well. Definitely try this food out even if you don't have a picky eater!

Pros: Very healthy, gravy base if you add water, palatable

Cons: Haven't seen any

Good tasting, healthy food but takes a lot to get enough nutrients

posted 5 years ago

I used this primarily with my dobie x when I was experimenting with various foods to mix with her primary kibble. Her favourite out of the Merrick dry foods was definitely the Wilderness blend, perhaps because it mixed buffalo with salmon and other fish. In fact, all of my pack enjoyed the taste of the Merrick kibble when they got it, but they needed a lot more food to maintain a normal weight than I was feeding with comparably priced premium foods. Perdy has always been fairly thin, but she definitely seemed lighter when the Merrick composed most of her kibble mixture. The dogs' coats also were a little coarser while on the Merrick dry.

Overall, it's not a bad food for mixing with other stuff, but I'd be reluctant to use it as my primary kibble. There are better foods out there for the price.

Pros: High quality ingredients, free shipping inside the continental US

Cons: Expensive especially given how much is necessary per day for proper nutrition

Great brand all around!

posted 6 years ago

While the cost for a 30-pound bag is initially more expensive, Merrick Wilderness Blend is well worth it in the long run. Because there aren't fillers like there are in other, less expensive brands of dry dog food, the dogs fill up faster and don't eat as much as they otherwise would. As an adolescent dog, my year old border collie had difficulty keeping weight on and was noticeably under weight. After making the switch from Nutro to Merrick his weight shot up from 34 pounds to a healthy 40 pounds. His (and the other dogs') coats have become shinier and fuller as well. As an added bonus, all of the dogs love the taste!

Pros: Healthy food with natural ingredients

Cons: Pricier than grocery store brands

The food is healthy but may need help in atttracting the dogs to it--some like it others don't--it helps if you wet it.

Pros: healthy

Cons: none
