Walks are much better now

posted 5 years ago

This is the best collar/leash set I have ever bought for my dog. She is a pit bull mix and when she was a pup she loved to pull on the leash when we went on walks. As she got older the she wasn't quite as rambunctious but she got a lot more muscles. Getting her a harness helped a little, but sometimes she was like a sled dog, the harness only enabling her to pull more.

After we walked on the Illusion Collar not only did the pulling stop but we could pass by yards that had barking dogs and pedestrians on the street. Even people on bicycles didn't bother her. We were finally able to go for long (3-4 mile) walks without a problem.

The leash that comes with the collar is very short. When I first saw it I couldn't believe that was it. I thought how am I ever going to walk her on that short little leash. But the collar and leash are designed for the dog to walk right next to you. It turns out she walks so good on the leash that most of the time my hand is resting on the hook where the leash attaches to the collar.

I do have some problems when I put the collar on her because I don't know how tight to make it so I end up adjusting it several times before it is just right. Otherwise the collar slips down and the top of the collar no longer rests right behind my dog's ears, which can make it less effective.

I would highly recommend watching The Dog Whisperer before using this collar. It will give you a much better idea of how to use the collar and leash most effectively.

Pros: Much easier to walk my dog

Cons: My dogs looks a little funny when she wears it

Keeps the choke in optimal position.

posted 5 years ago

The illusion collar has been great for my dog, Emma. Being a golden retriever, her neck is shaped so that regular choke collars just slide down to the base above her shoulders. Ideally you want a choke to be right at the top under the jaw. That way your corrections can be much softer and will turn their head toward you.

Then we had a trainer who wanted to only use positive reinforcement so we bought a harness. This worked a little better but I think only because Emma identified it with class and got more into a working mode while wearing it. If something really got her attention though it really wasn't much beter.

Then we tried a prong collar. This was much better at getting her attention with much getler pulls but still tended to slide halfway down her neck even when fitted properly.

So we ordered on of Ceasar Milan's Illusion collars. This is great! The choke is always right under her jaw, we don't have to correct nearly as hard (or as often). The only difficulty is it is not a quick on/off device. There are straps to feed through buckles that have to be checked to make sure they aren't twisted. It is totally possible to put it on inside out or backwards. However, once you get the hang of it you will be quite pleased you took the time. I think your dog will too.

Pros: Keeps the choke in optimal position at the base of the jaw.

Cons: Takes a minute or two (and some practice to put on).

Excellent training tool, great quality

posted 6 years ago

From the Cesar Millan Web site:

"Cesar Millan, the acclaimed dog behavior expert, has cared for and rehabilitated dogs for most of his life. Cesar's philosophy espouses that there are no bad dogs. Unruly and aggressive behaviors result from lack of proper training - people training. Cesar and his wife Ilusion realized that owners want to properly control their dogs during walks, but often lacked the necessary tools to do so. They designed The Illusion Dog Training Collar to assist owners in achieving maximum control during walks. It is sized for small to large breeds."

Basically, the Illusion collar keeps the leash up near the top of the neck/right under the chin, where Cesar recommends a leash sit for proper training and control.

This works exceptionally well - Lily is squirrel crazy. I'd walk her around Seattle, and if she saw a squirrel, she would go nuts. The Illusion collar is the only thing that worked and allowed me to control her in these situations.

I now live in a place where, for whatever reason, there don't seem to be any squirrels except in the woods, so I don't use the collar much anymore. But I think that's the point - you use this as a training tool.

Pros: Made in USA, does what it promises

Cons: You must adjust the collar every time you use it

Works for Cesar

posted 6 years ago

I bought this Illusion Collar for my Irish Setter--I couldn't make it stay in the proper position. It just slipped to the side with his silky hair. I love watching Cesar use it on his show. I ended up donating the collar to our humane society to use in the training sessions.

Pros: concept great

Cons: did'nt fit right on every dog

Works for a stubborn dog...

posted 5 years ago

Our trainer introduced this collar to us for our 2 beagles and beagle-pit-boxer mix. The 1st 2 are incredibly stubborn and if they see a rabbit or fox at the park, they take off. We needed something effective that would not choke them. This works for them.

Pros: Keeps a stubborn dog inline

Cons: Can be tricky to put on in a hurry
