Don't agree with the use of Flexis
posted 5 years ago
As a dog trainer, I strongly disagree with the use of any kind of retractable lead. Yes, they do allow the dog more freedom to roam, sniff, and "be a dog". These are the exact reasons that I disagree with them. When a dog is on leash, I want there to be a rapport and connection between us. This is difficult to do with a retractable leash. The large, cumbersome handle gets in the way, and the design of the leash results in there being a slight tension on the leash at all times (unless the lead is locked, which generally is not used). Tension is exactly what you DON'T want between dog and handler! Use a leather, cotton, or nylon 6-8' lead and teach your dog to work WITH you when they are on lead!
Pros: allows dog to roam and "do his own thing"
Cons: no connection or rapport between handler and dog
