The PETCO Raincoat for Dogs is a light jacket offering basic protection.

October 6, 2011 7:05 pm | By Zootoo Editor Flinn D.

With the number of raincoats for pets currently on the market, you may find yourself wondering whether our four-legged friends have lost their natural ability to stay dry through their own fur coverings. But some pets simply hate going out in the rain. If you (and your pooches) are ready to try out a little protection from wet weather, the PETCO Raincoat for Dogs makes an ideal starter jacket, at an affordable price.

Available in a traditional slicker-colored yellow or in pink (for those canines who like to be the center of attention at the dog park), the PETCO Raincoat for Dogs is a no-fuss, simple covering for your dog’s neck and back. The material is a soft poly-vinyl that repels water effectively, but won’t give your dog much in the way of added warmth.

Another aspect of the PETCO Raincoat for Dogs that may be a welcome bonus for pets and owners who are new to raingear is the simple easy-on, easy-off fit. The raincoat fits around your dog’s belly with a simple adjustable Velcro strap, and the hood uses an elastic tie and collar to stay on your dog’s head.

Although the PETCO Raincoat for Dogs is easy to get on and off your pooch, it’s worth noting that the simple design may not completely cover your dog’s sides. The raincoat drapes over the dog’s back, and while dogs who don’t enjoy having too much coverage on their bodies may prefer this style, if you’re standing up to torrential storms, you may find that some wind and rain gets underneath the edges of the coat.

What’s undeniable about the PETCO Raincoat for Dogs is the low price compared to other coats on the market. The jacket retails for about $8.50 during some online sales, and also includes a reflective stripe on the back for added visibility. So if you’re looking for a bargain raincoat to give your dog just a little extra protection, but aren’t ready to invest in a heavier coat, this coat is a solid option.

Pros: Light and easy-to-use; reflective stripe for added safety.

Cons: Material and design may not stand up to serious storms.
