Is there a 12-step program for a Greenie addiction
posted 6 years ago
My beagle lab mix Kismet is utterly addicted to Greenies. Every evening when I feed my dogs their dinner, Kismet will either take a few bites of dinner or not eat at all and sit next to me staring hard at me or uttering little demanding yips. And I know it's for a Greenies. Only after she's had her Greenie will she eat the rest of her dinner!
Greenies are intended as dental chews, and they do indeed keep her teeth sparkling and her breath fresh, but I have perforce gone to using them as daily treats. I have used her addiction to my advantage in training her all sorts of tricks, but giving her her a daily fix is a little bit expensive. Given that she weighs 50 pounds, she really needs the Regular size greenies as her optimal size, but to save a little money, I have gone to the petites, especially since I have two dogs and you can't give a Greenie to one dog without the other. I personally also think Greenies smell delicious, love opening a fresh box of them.
Greenies has reformulated their product so they are chewier and more flexible than the original product, so there is little danger of choking hazard, and that in my opinion would only occur if you gave a small dog a larger size Greenie. It's always best to keep an eye on your dog when its chewing on a treat in any case.
Overall, this is an excellent product; they're a bit expensive as a daily treat, but given how much my dogs enjoy them, I think they'll well worth the cost.
Pros: flavorful, healthy, good for the teeth
Cons: they're almost too good: dog can't get enough of 'em, so a little pricey as an every-day treat.
