The Outward Hound Eco Lightweight Carrier is comfortable but durable.

December 15, 2011 1:20 pm | By Zootoo Editor Mary T.

The Outward Hound Eco Lightweight Carrier by Kyjen is a simple, straightforward canvas tote bag and an environmentally friendly way to carry your pet around. Whether you’re toting Fido or your feline to the beach, the mall or on the subway, the Outward Hound carrier will give you all the space you need.

True to its name, the Eco Lightweight Carrier is light and durable — as well as handsome, with pale gray and charcoal blended swirly patterns. Owners will also appreciate that the straps that don’t dig into your shoulder, and the carrier is made of easily-foldable material that can be rolled up when the tote is not being used.

I put the Outward Hound Eco Lightweight Carrier to the test with a dog that was probably a bit too large for it — and the carrier still had excellent results. Therefore, I surmise that it will work fine for dogs of a smaller size as well. Though bulky, our tester dog is compact and can typically fit into smaller dog carriers. With the Eco Lightweight Carrier, his head poked up over one edge — and after an initial freak-out while he got his center of gravity planted, he found his footing and calmed down, after which we had a pleasant walk around the block.

The Eco Lightweight Carrier even has an answer for those moments when you run into those other pooches and your dog scrambles to leap out (okay, maybe that’s just our tester dog). The carrier has easy-to-fasten Velcro straps that will hold your dog in place — although in my experience, these aren’t necessary. Once you get the dog into the bag and the straps over your arm gravity keeps him in there.

Pros: Lightweight and comfortable for pooch and owner; sturdy.

Cons: None.
