Chef Michael's Filet Mignon packages a healthy recipe in convenient canned form.

September 15, 2010 9:41 am | By Zootoo Editor Flinn D.

Filet Mignon Flavor, by Chef Michael’s Canine Creations, is a canned dog food that garnishes its meaty flavor with pea and carrots — a healthy combination that delights dogs. While the product makes no claims to using only all natural ingredients, a glance at the list of ingredients on the back of the package doesn’t reveal any truly bad offenders. Aside from the meat and vegetables there are vitamins A, E and B-12, sodium triployphosphate, choline chloride and niacine – I know they sound scary but they are preservatives that are common in most wet dog foods.

While it would be nice if we all had the time and money to afford natural, preservative free dog foods there are certain nagging facts that can make them impractical for the time being. For one, these products cost a lot more than their preservative laden cousins, and for another, they tend not to last as long, making it imperative that you keep them refrigerated with human food while you’re working your way through a container.

So, until a more pragmatic approach is taken to natural dog food, if you want to get wet food for your pooch you’re probably going to be getting it out of a can. That said, if you do go the canned route, you couldn’t do better than Chef Michael’s Canine Creations. It’s nutritious, and dogs love the taste, and the addition of vegetables to the savory meat flavor improves on an already stellar recipe.

Pros: Healthier than similar canned options; dogs love the taste.

Cons: Not entirely preservative-free.

I have 3 cats and they love this food. They eat less and walk away with a full belly. Eating less means pooping less and less litter. All around a great choice for my cats.
