Editor's Review

Natural Balance Irish Stew is delicious and all-natural, but too small for a full meal.

September 7, 2010 11:50 pm | By Zootoo Editor Flinn D.

The size of Eatables Irish Stew made me wonder whether the folks at Natural Balance were going for a dog food or just a dog treat – it comes in an extremely small sized can and it’s hard for me to imagine how it could be enough to feed a hungry pooch. But the can claims that it is a dog food so okay, I’ll review it as one.

With Dick Van Patten overseeing everything on the assembly line over at Natural Balance there’s no point in analyzing the ingredients. I’ll just say they are excellent, and that everything Dick Van Patten touches turns to natural food gold — potatoes, carrots, the freshest meats — and everything they put out is packed full of vitamins. And if that weren’t enough, DVP uses very limited and mostly natural preservatives and only when absolutely necessary.

But before I can wholeheartedly recommend Eatables, like I wholeheartedly recommend all the other Natural Balance food products, a little more thought needs to be put into the execution. The product is just too small to fill up a dog unless you combine it with Natural Balance dry food, as the product label suggests. I know, I know according to the AAFCO, Irish Stew is a full and balanced meal — so apparently there are enough nutrients and calories to qualify it as such, but our tester dog, for one, was hungry afterwards.

Bottom line: Until they work out the kinks with this new product, you’re better off trying any number of other delicious and all natural Natural Balance Foods.

Pros: Top-quality ingredients, vitamin-packed; your dog will love the taste.

Cons: Some dogs may be hungry after only one serving.
