Acclimates Pets to the Sounds of Babies

posted 5 years ago

We had a pack of dogs that didn’t have much experience with children, much less babies, and twins were expected. I chose “Preparing Fido,” a CD from Animal Behavior Associates Inc., and it was my responsibility to play it for the dogs. At first, the dogs alerted to the various cries, coos, and laughs, but after a while, they didn’t seem to pay any attention. When the babies came home, the dogs were more interested in the babies’ scents than their verbalizations, so it’s not easy to tell if the CD had an effect.

However, one day, one baby, about two months old, was inconsolable and cried and cried and cried. No one could pacify her. The dog I worried about the most got off his bed, solemnly walked over to the baby and looked into her eyes. They made eye contact, and the dog gave a nod. The baby immediately stopped crying, and the dog turned and went back into his bed.

Pros: Prepares dogs and cats to crying, cooing and other baby sounds

Cons: Effectiveness is difficult to assess

Much-needed resource

posted 5 years ago

As an adoption counselor at our animal shelter, I think this would be a tremendous resource and will recommend it to adopters who plan to have children after they adopt a dog. So many animals get returned to the shelter, not so much because they don't get along with babies, but because people no longer feel they have time for their animal companions. Maybe listening to this and following its advice will help prepare the expectant parents, making them mindful of not only the new family member coming, but the animal family members' needs as well!

Pros: Well--produced

Cons: Don't know of any
