Be Smart Get this Book for a New Pup or Adopted Dog

posted 5 years ago

I have had the priviledge to work with Brian Kilcommons and i highly recommend this book whether you have a new pup or rescue
Brian has added lots of illustrations of himself and his wife sara working with the pups that helps you understand the concepts he is explaining...the games are easy to do and even the kids will like to play them with the pup... the pup has fun and is learning while playing...brian covers each concept in easy to understand language and has follow up problem solving for each concept...for each type of temperament like shy or pushy....NEADS recommends that new volunteers get a copy of this book as they use a lot of these techniques in the training of service dogs....
get this book for yourself or a friend and make sure to visit their website of the same name

Pros: easy format great dvd positive approach fun easy games

Cons: none come to mind

Love this book!

posted 6 years ago

I've been using this book so much since bringing my puppy home. It has a lot of good information presented in a readable format that is not intimidating. The approach is gentle and logical. It covers the basics (housebreaking, sit, come, crate training) as well as lessons to apply to other situations (mine, off, etc.)
There are lots of pictures and the book comes with a DVD. I haven't needed to use the DVD yet, but I've been told it is helpful.

Pros: readable, informative

Cons: none yet

Good training source

posted 5 years ago

This book is a good dog training source for potential trainers and pet parents. Although there are a few inconsistencies and questionable theories written by the authors, it is still a good starter for dog parents. The dvd that comes with it is very good. I do recommend this book to training class students and colleagues to take a look at.

Pros: great dvd included, clear and understandable

Cons: trainers use 1 or 2 questionable methods

Excellent book for first time puppy owners

posted 4 years ago

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I have learned just how easy it is for Harley, my little Yorkie to be a very smart puppy.

The video helped too, but best of all, when I e-mailed the author with a breed specific training question they replied in less than 12 hours!!!

Pros: Great resource, illustrations, and a how to video

Cons: none

Should be standard equipment with all puppies!

posted 6 years ago

Such a great book/DVD combo that we include it in our adoption packet at SPCA TampaBay, as well as making it required reading for our Family Dog Trainers.

Pros: Covers all the basics to get your puppy off on the right foot

Cons: It didn't come out sooner!
