'Mimi and Maty to the Rescue' is a fun, approachable book about helping animals.

January 27, 2012 12:58 am | By Zootoo Editor Flinn D.

A fun, snappy book, “Mimi and Maty to the Rescue” tells the story of an unstoppable duo, Mimi and her dog Maty, who only happens to have three legs. Inspired by the real-life animal rights hero Mimi Ausland, whose charitable and interactive website, Freekibble.com, has enabled users to donate over 675 million pieces of kibble to shelter animals, the book was written by Mimi’s mother Brooke Smith to appeal to children who can’t resist a cute animal in need of some help.

Mimi’s dog in the book, Maty, was also inspired by the real-life Maty, a shelter dog who, like her character, doesn’t let her lack of one leg get her down. The fictional tale is made sweeter by the knowledge that Mimi herself once kept a pet rescue journal, and continues to help shelter pets through her work.

Smith hopes to make “Mimi and Maty to the Rescue” the first in a series featuring several books, each focusing on a different animal that Mimi and Maty set out to rescue. And as a special bonus for pet lovers, for each book sold, Halo will be donating five meals to shelters that Freekibble.com partners with.

The book also features bright and clever illustrations by Alli Arnold, and steers clear of having a preachy edge. In short, this approachable, enjoyable reading material should delight and inspire children and adults alike to become more involved in animal rights in both small and large ways.

Pros: Fun, snappy book; approachable for children; clever illustrations.

Cons: None.
