A charming new favorite of my 5-year-old niece

posted 5 years ago

Through the telling of "ugly" dog, Elwood's story, author Karen Quigley, touches on many issues that resonate with adults and children. This true tale helps to shine a brighter light on homeless animals. It encourages without preaching; shows rather than tells. Through the story we can see the benefits of having greater compassion toward those who are different than ourselves, and learn to look for the inner beauty in the people and animals in our lives. My five-year-old niece loved the story so much, that we've purchased two more books to give as gifts.

Pros: A heartwarming story with quirky and imaginative illustrations

Cons: Would love it if there were more books about Elwood's adventures.

The school kids loved the book and love Elwood!

posted 5 years ago

I read "Everyone Loves Elwood" to first graders at a local school as part of this year's Read Across America Program. Keeping first graders interested is a challenge and this book did it. It opened discussion about their own pets and what was "funny" about them. One very astute little girl said there was a moral to the story. It was that sometimes, "Different means Special." Out of the mouth of babes...

Pros: Well written and catchy illustrations

Cons: text is a little crowded

A tale about being the best you can with what you've got!

posted 5 years ago

Elwood didn't come from the best of places or under the best of circumstances, nor was he gifted with what some would say a certain "Canine beauty"... but Elwood teaches that there's more to all of us than just a pretty face. It's about accepting yourself for who you are. In these days with so many crazy messages our kids receive that make them grow up waaaaay too fast... Elwood brings to light what living life is really all about.... what really matters.

It is a wonderful read for children of all ages: 4 to 104!

You will love it!

Pros: Easy reading... sweet story to touch the hearts of young readers

Cons: None. It's just a GREAT book!

I love Elwood too!

posted 5 years ago

Elwood understands what it's like to be different. He sees the beauty in all of us, those who are pretty and those of us who are pretty INSIDE!

Hooray for the wonderful message that Elwood spreads!! Our very own doggie does his best to help out the unfortunate as well and often uses his celebrity to help those less fortunate!

We love Elwood and hope that by reading his book and heeding his message, our world can be a more loving and kind place!

thanks Elwood!

Pros: good will ambassador Elwood sets fabulous example!!

Cons: none

Heartwarming!

posted 5 years ago

This is a must read for young children to help them learn that true beauty is on the inside. Elwood's beginnings were bleak and tenuous simply because of his outer shell. It was only through fate that he ended up in the arms of someone who loved him for all he could be if given a chance. I bought 4 copies - one for each of my grandchildren and one for ME!

Pros: Inspiring story and enchanting artwork

Cons: None
