Liv-a-Littles combine top-shelf natural ingredients with an enticing taste.

October 4, 2010 10:09 am | By Zootoo Editor Flinn D.

Liv-a-Littles are cutely named oven-baked treats from the folks at Halo. In keeping with the proud “all-natural” stamp on the label, I wasn’t able to find any artificial flavors or colors listed in the ingredients. Instead, I found a wholesome blend of cranberries, pumpkin, sweet potatoes and green tea – all antioxidant-rich ingredients that will beef up your pet’s immune system.

I was also pleasantly relieved to find no common fillers such as corn syrup or molasses. The treat’s crunchy texture stimulates dogs’ natural chewing instinct and its real chicken and cheese taste is a combination that both dogs and cats find irresistible.

So are there any downsides to Halo treats for your pet? Not as of yet, but I would like to raise a question as to the newness and therefore unproven-ness of some of these ingredients. Yogurt, sweet potatoes and green tea only cropped up in natural dog foods recently and while their champions crow about the benefits of such elements as acidophilus, many of us are still waiting to hear the results of more long-term research before jumping on the bandwagon.

What’s undeniable about this product, though, is the taste and appeal for pets. When our tester dog tried Liv-a-Littles for the first time, he loved them and devoured them quickly. He broke them down in a couple of seconds, biting through the hard exteriors with a quick chomp, and then taking his time chewing them. The package claims that the chewy exterior improves dog’s breath and dental health — our tester dog has good breath already (perhaps because of the many canine dental hygiene products that he tests for us), so I could not verify this claim, but pet owners who wither from their kitty or pooch’s breath will certainly want to give these a try.

Pros: All-natural ingredients, loaded with antioxidants; both cats and dogs relish the taste.

Cons: None.

My cats love this special treat! I give this to them if they have to have a pill or an extra long grooming session...or just because! They love it and beg for more!

Pros: My cats love this treat!

Cons: On the expensive side but well worth it!

My cat loves these!

posted 6 years ago

I've purchased these in both chicken and salmon, and while my cat liked both, he goes craziest for the chicken ones. I get them from www.vitacost.com for a little under $9... the cheapest I've found them so far. They do make a little bit of a mess when he eats them - all of the "powder" from the dried chicken piece ends up on the floor, but they're a great natural treat for him, and he loves them! The sizes vary in the container - some pieces are small (or almost "dust" depending on how much the containers been shaken) and others large, but my cat appreciates whatever I give him when this container comes out! If I give it a shake, he comes running! :)

Pros: healthy, no preservatives, my cat goes crazy for them!

Cons: a little messy when eaten, needs to be refrigerated (after open)

I have 3 cats and they love this food. They eat less and walk away with a full belly. Eating less means pooping less and less litter. All around a great choice for my cats.
