Although this DVD is for a cat audience, I invited my pet lovebird, as well as my cat crew to the first screening. I placed the lovebird’s cage near the TV in our bedroom and the show began. On screen a scene of life deep inside a cornfield, populated by a troop of shiny blackbirds, transported us. I settled into the bed to observe the lovebird’s reaction and waited for a crowd of crazed cats to flock into the room.
Cobweb, the oldest and wisest of my six, strolled by the door and froze at the sound of the blackbirds. She promptly stalked in to investigate, spied my lovebird’s cage, and visibly deflated. It was as if she said, “Oh, it’s just you.” to the lovebird, then left the room. Three more cat passersby followed suit, exiting the bedroom before they realized our television was full of blackbirds and corn! My lovebird on the other hand hopped around cocking her head, chirping commentary.
Fifteen minutes later, Cobweb launched a second investigation. She walked in, looked at the lovebird, then looked at the TV. Her eyes grew huge when she pinpointed the real source of the flapping feathers and husky chatter. She darted to the TV stand and made a quick sweep of the areas beside and underneath. Nothing. Could it be they are in that box? No, they have to be behind it! That box is paw impermeable. I swear they are under it! She continued her investigation for the next half hour. Other cats came in to assist. Some preferred to watch from the sidelines muttering at the screen from the foot of the bed.
The DVD content is brilliantly simple. At times it’s serene with faintly cawing birds, soft feather flapping and content corn nibbling. Other times, it explodes with breathtaking battle scenes and a lively chorus of squawking. Birds flit in and out of frame but the camera stays stationary letting the drama play out over an hour. The DVD is continuous play so it can run all day while humans are at the office.
In spite of all this activity, as a human, I found the DVD audio and visuals very relaxing. In fact, I couldn’t keep my eyes open. A few of my cats had a similar reaction. They lay at the foot of the bed alternately watching the blackbird show and dozing, but clearly roped in. The other cats were more intent on getting to the bottom of this blackbird business with hands on action and admirable teamwork.
This DVD is like a country field trip in a box. Cats, humans, and lovebirds alike give Kitty Show’s The Birds “raven” reviews.
Pros: The on-screen action will entrance your cats; continuous looping runs DVD without pause while you're away.
