I started using the bells on my pets when the pregnant stray I adopted gave birth a couple weeks after she came to my home. Putting bells on the kittens helped me keep track of them when they were old enough to wander around on their own. I have kept the bells on them, it helps me locate them and know who is who when I can't see them (when they are in the other room, at night), they all have bells that sounds a little different. I also like having bells on cats that go outside (mine don't) because I read that native bird species have come under pressure from pet cats.
